I wish to thank the very many who helped with the observing and counting during the 2006 Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch in southwest Whitby. After over 350 hours during 102 days I shall be closing down the official counting on Thursday, Nov.30.
The site locale, the camaraderie, the dedication to learning the jizz of hawks in flight, the non-raptors kept us busy. Although we did not have the likes of a Cave Swallow, Dickcissel, Golden-crowned Sparrow or Gyrfalcon there were plenty of "good" birds to challenge us. The very nearness of a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, as well as a juvenile Cooper's Hawk prior to its pouncing on a Red-winged Blackbird, along with many other sightings, kept us happy. With 2 days to go CMRW has "recovered" from 2 low-in-numbers years, with over 8200 migrating raptors-- including a record number of each of BALD EAGLE (57) and OSPREY (158). To date the Rough-legged count has been only 30, and the total for the Broad-winged was below 1000 for the 5th consecutive year. It has been an educational experience for several very keen families. Again I thank those who participated.
