Posting for Nicholas von Maltzahn: This to note that a male Barrow's Goldeneye is conspicuous among the eighty or more Common Goldeneye on the Rideau River just below the rapids at the tennis club in Parc Riverain (say 50 metres north of the tennis club). This may well be the same male I saw a bit upstream on 30 November, then about 200 metres north of the 417 bridge. I couldn't distinguish a female counterpart to this male, but I'm rather new to this. The male is unambiguous with that distinct crescent patch across its face and fuller nape. A perhaps hybrid Goldeneye just like that pictured by Tony Beck et al. is also present in the group. With best wishes, Nicholas von Maltzahn

On my way, I stopped at Carlsbad Springs to check the place where Cowbirds where frequently seen last Winter, that is behind houses at the S.E. corner of Russell Rd and Boundary Rd. Surely, there were Brown-headed Cowbirds there, at least 9 males and one female. While I was counting the Cowbirds, a Meadowlark flew to the tree where they were sitting, and left after a few seconds; I saw it fly short distances on the West side of Boundary Rd. a couple of times but could not have a look long enough to note all the distinctive traits; so while I think it is an Eastern Meadowlark, I cannot completely rule out the possibility that it is a Western. At the Embrun sewage lagoons, the Bonaparte Gulls where present (a total of 15) and 5 Green-winged Teals. I checked all the ponds and ducks; on the N.E. pond, among numerous others ducks a Northern Shoveler was present, as well as a Canvasback (also noted by David B.). In a field in front of the lagoons, a Lapland Longspurs was with a flock of some 40 Horned Larks. Good birding. The highlight was a male Eurasian Wigeon off the east end of the island (KFN property). It was in a mixed flock of Greater Scaup, American Wigeon and Gadwall. Unfortunately, it was flushed by one of 3 Snowy Owls at the east end. The "Owl Woods" was productive with 15+ Long-eared Owl, 3 Northern Saw-whet Owls and a late Wilson's Snipe. The were a number of hawks scattered around the island, 18 Rough-legged Hawk, 11 Red-tailed Hawk, 9 Northern Harrier and 6 American Kestrel. good birding Bruce Located 18 km. west of Kingston. Exit off Hwy. 401 at exit 593 (County Rd. 4, Camden East) and drive south to the very end (Millhaven). Turn right on Hwy. 33 and drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the Amherst Island ferry. The ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is $6.00 Canadian round trip. There are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on the ferry, and at the island ferry dock. The East End K.F.N. property is at the easternmost part of the island on the east side of the Lower Forty Foot Road. To reach the Owl Woods, turn left (east) at the four-way stop sign by the general store and drive 3.4 km along Front Rd. to the (seasonal) Marshall Forty-Foot Rd. Marshall Forty-Foot Rd. is across the road from house #2320. Drive along Marshall Rd. to the mid-way point, where there is an "S" in the road (1.2 km, look for the K.F.N. kiosk which had owl observing ethics). Park in the gravel lane or off the road edge.
