First off I would like to thank everyone for their support, kind words and
sharing their memories with James, Larissa and myself. It makes me proud to
hear from people telling us how much they learned, looked up too and
experienced through my Dad. To hear from people I haven't seen since I was a
kid means more to me then I could ever express, so once again, thank you
everyone.

Visitation will be on Sunday December 17, 2006 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. The
funeral service will be held at 10am Monday December 18, 2006 with the
internment at Greenhill Cemetery in Lucknow.

Both the visitation and the funeral service will be held at

Cooper Funeral Home

Its been a quiet week here in the Hamilton Study Area. Many people are able
to enjoy this balmy weather however, bird numbers are down and birds remain
elusive in the strong south winds.

There are a couple of spots diverting from the lake this week which have
been good for wintering ducks. LaSalle Marina is a good spot for a wide
variety of ducks with an immature Snow Goose, Canvasback (many), Redhead,
Greater Scaup, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Pied-billed Grebe, Horned Grebe
and many American Coots being seen in the week.

In the Windermere Basin, a male Wood Duck, Northern Shoveler, Northern
Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Lesser Scaup and Ruddy Duck were reported last
weekend. Of note, a couple of White-crowned Sparrows are kicking about here
to add to the winter list.

The BARROW'S GOLDENEYE is still being seen at the end of Gray's Road if you
need a lake fix.

Over the nearby High Level Bridge last Saturday, a late Turkey Vulture was
seen moving through, a good winter bird. A couple of Turkey Vultures are
also present in the Cayuga Area near River Road and Regional Road 3. Also
to report in the raptor department, a Northern Goshawk was making a meal of
an Eastern Cottontail near VanWagners Ponds and a Red-shouldered Hawk was
photographed on Parkside Drive in Waterdown. Another Red-shouldered Hawk
was reported from the Campbellville area. Bald Eagles seem to be building
in numbers with birds reported from York Blvd., over the Hamilton bay and
the Brantford Area this week. A Peregrine Falcon was seen near the Lift
Bridge chasing pigeons.

Not many passerines to report this week. At the Valley Inn, two Fox
Sparrows were seen in the property leading to the Laking gardens, a Winter
Wren was seen and heard and Song, Swamp and White-throated Sparrows continue
to be seen scratching around at the seed put out on the trail.

In the odds and sods, a Northern Shrike was seen at the Halton Waste
Disposal site on Hwy #25, across from the Rattlesnake Golf Club, another
seen on the Pinteum Trail at the RBG, a good sized flock of Wild Turkey were
seen on 1st Road West near the radio tower and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet
continues to be seen at Shell Park with another seen along Spencer Creek in
Dundas.

Christmas Bird Counts in Peel and Hamilton Regions are happening in the next
couple weeks. Make sure to report all your sightings, they could make a
difference to numbers on the count and/or to birds seen in the count week
period.

On a sad note this week, we note the passing of John Miles. John was an
integral part of the Hamilton Naturalists Club and the birding community.
He has led many outings over the years for the HNC and for OFO. He was
actively involved in many Christmas Bird Counts and was best known for
founding the Haldimand Bird Observatory where he has been the chief bander
for many years providing valuable statistics for research in ornithology and
bird migration studies. He will be missed by the birding community and our
condolences go out to his family.

Good birding,
Cheryl Edgecombe
