Hello Ontbirders,
The Woodstock, ON CBC was held on Saturday December
16th in balmy conditions (a high of 8 degrees, light
west wind, sunny periods throughout the day).
Conditions helped us find some neat birds, but not
nearly the diversity that we would have expected given
that all water was open.
16 field observers and 10 feeder watchers observed
24,121 birds of 58 species (2 below average).
Highlights included:
Tundra Swan - 6 at Pittock Lake seen by James and
Bruce Holdsworth, Richard and Jeff Skevington
Bald Eagle - 1 adult seen over Lochart Pond by JS
Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 seen near Beachville by JH and
BH (it has settled into the same wintering spot for
the 6th consecutive year)
Merlin - 1 seen by JH, BH and RS
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1 at Pittock Lake seen by JS
Eastern Bluebird - 6 near Hogsback seen by JS
Hermit Thrush - 1 at Pittock Lake seen by JS
New high counts included:
Canada Goose - 3724
Cackling Goose - 4
American Herring Gull - 571
Swamp Sparrow - 24
Low counts included:
American Kestral - 1 (ties last year's low)
Mourning Dove - 190
For the crow watchers, American Crows numbered 11,736,
down considerably from the highest years. They are
clearly more widely distributed than usual with the
nice weather.

This is just to clairify that the Kingston Field
Naturalists do not own the Owl Woods on Amherst
Island. You do not have to be a member to visit the
Owl Woods. The KFN has a nature reserve on the east
tip of Amherst. Membership or member accompaniment is
required for this property.
Thanks very much

This morning as I was photographing the area's second adult male SNOWY OWL,
four LAPLAND LONGSPURS flew overhead on Concession 19 Rd. near Ste-Rose. In
the same general area thousands upon thousands of GREATER SNOW GEESE were
flying from one field to another.
Photo of distant owl (whiter than 1st male) can be found here:
http://jacquesbouvier.blogspot.com
DIRECTIONS: From Hwy 417 east of Casselman take exit 58 and proceed north
on
Cty Rd 8 for about 1 km until you come to Concession 20 in the middle of
the
long curve. Turn right (east) on Concession 20. Concession 19 is just
north of Conc. 20. The Snowy Owl was in the ploughed field near house 2493
between Ste-Rose and Desnoyers Rds.
