Leading an entourage of cars with about 20 Durham Field Naturalists members
along sideroads north of Taunton and between Westney Rd. and Lakeridge Rd. on a
cold January 20th morning showed that bird feeders are not yet attracting great
numbers. Suet feeders are certainly bringing in Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers.
Some of the 23 species identified were Red-tailed Hawks(10), Am.Kestrel(2),
Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches, House Finches, one American Robin
(sideline 2-Kinsale Rd., south of Concession 9) and Horned Larks-- in the
fields beside sideline 4, north of Concession 8.

Concession 8 is the 2nd E-W road north of highway 7; sideine 4 is the 2nd N-S
road west of LakeRidge Rd.(highway 23).

The highlight around the Niagara Region today, was a nice adult-basic
CALIFORNIA GULL perched above the falls this afternoon, from at least
3:20-4:50 pm.
on the medium-sized rock about 80 yards out from the Canadian shore, and
right at the brink of the falls. Compared to the more well-known California
Gull
that frequents Adam Beck, this bird had much more red on the bill, as well
as bright yellow-green legs (as opposed to greenish-gray) comparable to that
of most adult Ring-bills.

The Adam Beck California was not seen around noon, although present were
5-6 ICELAND GULLS of various ages, along with 2 adult THAYER'S GULLS.

A quick and cold walk on the Niagara escarpment trails in Queenston in
the early morning turned up a CAROLINA WREN, along with 10-12 AMERICAN ROBINS.

Port Weller East in the late morning had quite a bit of waterfowl, with an
unexpected for the date and location, 80+ COMMON MERGANSERS in various sized
flocks around the pier, along with 6 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS on the fallen
logs on the west side of the canal. Also present were 12 GADWALL, 15+ BLACK
DUCKS, and singles of NORTHERN PINTAIL and HOODED MERGANSER, amongst the
more expected Waterfowl species for the time of year.

With the winter landscape now showing a more recognizable face (snow and ice
vs. mud and open water), visiting species from the north seem to be turning up
with a little more regularity. On Friday there were two light-phase
Rough-legged Hawks at the northernmost end of Bathurst Street (i.e. past
Newmarket and Holland Landing). Not long after I observed those two, Keith
Dunn, on a separate outing, had the same sighting to report about 5 kms to the
southwest (Queensville Sdrd. and 2nd Concession).
It is possible that these were the same hawks, though the ones I saw
(observed through a scope), were hunting well north of where Bathurst ends.

Also observed near the north end of Bathurst on Friday was a flock of 100+
Snow Buntings in the field just south of the big white and orange building on
the west side of the road. A small flock of 11 Horned Larks was coming to the
road to pick at salt and pebbles at the same time.

Back at "Keith's intersection" there was a Northern Harrier hunting on the
west side of 2nd Concession on Friday and, a few kms north, there was Northern
Shrike hunting along Holborn Road both Thursday and Friday. An American
Kestrel has also been hunting in this area for over a month, ranging over to
Leslie Street, where I saw it hovering over a field Friday afternoon.

The west end of Ravenshoe Road was quiet when I was there Friday. There was
a small flock of Snow Buntings and little else but earlier in the week Keith
observed two Common Redpolls foraging with a flock of Tree Sparrows along
Ravenshoe Rd. This has not been a big winter for northern finches, so the
redpolls were an interesting find. On Tuesday, Keith observed one of the two
on-again-off-again Snowy Owls along the tundralike stretch of Yonge Street that
runs south from Ravenshoe. They were nowhere to be seen on Friday.
Ditto for the Bald Eagles seen near Jackson's Point last weekend - separate
searches by Keith and myself on Friday yielded no eagles, but that's not
surprising. They could just as easily be on the west side of Lake Simcoe or
further north.

Keith had a DC Cormorant as consolation while I settled for 30 Cm. Goldeneyes
braving a nor'wester that darkened the sky, whitecapped the open water north of
Roche's Point, and eventually made me abandon Lake Drive in favour of a retreat
to Newmarket and the safety of a Tim Horton's.

I was not out today and neither was Keith. If anyone was checking north York
region, I'd be interested in hearing what was about.

  Ron Fleming, Newmarket

Newmarket and Keswick are north of Toronto, about halfway to Barrie.

At the road going in to the sewage treatment plant north side of Thicksons
Woods I saw 6 crossbills in the small spruce trees here.Take exit 412 from
the 401 drive south on Thicksons Rd to the
entrance to the sewage plant and watch the spruce trees on the north side of
the road.
I met Dave Milsom who had at least 1 white-winged crossbill along Halls
Rd.Walk into the spruce and tamarack trees and listen for the males
song.Exit the 401 at Brock St in Whitby Exit 410 and go south to Victoria St
West turn right and drive to Halls Rd turn left and about half way down to
the spruce trees
   Good winter listing.
