We went birding to Amherst Island today, my first trip, first sighting was a
northern harrier hawk, saw many chickadees, a downy woodpecker along the trail
who was on tthe feeder, then off to the jack pines at the back of the "Owl
Woods" trail to a dense area where we saw many (approx 8-12) long-eard owls,
both flying and roosting in the trees, all were very timid but one owl was on
"guard duty" and watched us very carefully from above on a high branch.

Directions: Exit off Hwy. 401 at exit 593 (County Road 4, Camden East)
and drive south to the very end (Millhaven). Turn right on Hwy. 33 and
drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the Amherst Island ferry. The
ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the half hour and leaves the
island on the hour. Cost is $6.00 round trip.

Hi Folks,

Today at 12:57 I observed a darkish Gyrfalcon (grey Juv?? or dark
Adult?? - poor lighting and I did not see the leg colour) today at the
St. Mary's Paper Mill. It came from out of the factory mist and captured
a ROPI amongst a group of about 20 ROPI that were sitting along the old
silo that is beside the old original stone building . It then flew to
the nearby roof-top on the newer adjacent building and proceeded to eat
the ROPI.

This is the first Gyrfalcon reported in the area this fall/winter.

Sault Ste. Marie is 3.5 hours west of Sudbury along Hwy 17. The St.
Mary's Paper Mill is located along the St. Mary's River, west of Huron
Steet, at its south end. (near the intersection of Canal Drive)

Good Birding

This morning at 10:30 there was a flock of between 25 and 30 White-winged
Crossbills at the North Tract of the York Regional Forest, about 6 km east of
Newmarket. The birds were vocal, feeding on spruce cones by the side of
McCowan Road, about 250 m south of Davis Drive. Directions: From the 404, take
the Davis Drive exit and follow Davis Drive east to McCowan Rd.

Hello Ontbirders

I did a quick bit of scouting in the cold this morning and found/
relocated several interesting ducks.
Much of the river systems are frozen forcing the birds to concentrate.

The male Barrow's Goldeneye continues near the Rideau Tennis Club in
Vanier (at the end of Donald).
Also present were 8 Great Black-backed Gulls and one first winter
Ring-billed Gull.
Directions courtesy of Neily World:
http://ca.geocities.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/rideaue4.htm

2 female Wood Ducks and a female Hooded Merganser were at Billings
Bridge.
Also present were 40 Great Black-backed Gulls.
Directions courtesy of Neily World:
http://ca.geocities.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/rideaue6.htm

1 drake Hooded Merganser was near the Mill in Manotick.
Directions courtesy of Watson's Mill website:
http://www.watsonsmill.com/manotick_map.html
Note - I recommend parking by the school, or on Millview Street, on
the east side of the river.
Then walk down to the river under, or near the bridge.

The drake Wood Duck and the male Belted Kingfisher were still at
Graham Creek in Bayshore.
Directions:
1) From Carling Ave., turn south on Bayshore Drive. Turn right (west)
on Woodridge Cr., and follow it all the way around to the
Recreational Centre/Police Station/Minto Sales Office.
Park in the free parking of the Recreational Centre. Look for the
large foot bridge over the creek, in the direction of the Queensway.
2) From Queensway Westbound, take the Bayshore exit, turn left on
Woodridge Cr. and continue per above.
3) From Queensway Eastbound, take Holly Acres exit. Turn left (north)
on Holly Acres Road to Carling Ave. Turn right (east) and go to the
first set of lights - Bayshore Drive. Follow as per above.

In other news, over the last few days, I was able to locate at least
two adult Bald Eagles in the general area of Shirleys Bay/Riddel Road.
At the Kerwin Road Trail, several White-winged Crossbills are
actively displaying, with males occasionally doing aerial flights
while singing.
