Throughout January Hall's Rd. and area in southwest Whitby,ON, has been home to
a number of hawks and owls, BUT one has to be there at the "right" time, it
varying muchly.
Between 9 and 10am today I had a great look at an adult ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
perched in a large oak tree on the west side of LakeRidge Rd., a third of the
way towards the lake from Victoria St. Two RED-TAILED HAWKS were hovering
overhead, and a NORTHERN HARRIER was sighted from the Hall's Rd. side.
The Sobey's Warehouse fields often harbour Red-tailed Hawks and American
Kestrels.

For 5 or more weeks a BARRED OWL has been seen along Hall's Rd., usually in the
early morning hours at the north pathway entrance. Many photos have been taken,
prior to the bird deciding to fly off into the woods.
Today (Jan.27) it was seen at 1:30pm much further north.

Exit the 401 at Salem Rd. (in Ajax), south to Bayly, east to LakeRidge; one
block further is Hall's Rd., and 2km. further east is the Sobey Warehouse area,
on the north side of Victoria (eastward extension of Bayly).

James Kamstra is the guest speaker at the Pickering Naturalists meeting on
Thursday, Feb. 1--7:30pm--in the O'Brien Room, on the east side of the
Pickering Recreational Centre. His topic--Biodiversity from Rio to the Pantanal.

A male Brewer's Duck (MallardXGadwall) was present this morning at
Lakeview Marina in Windsor. The bird was with a large flock of
Mallards at the mouth of Little River. The marina affords a good view
of Peche Island where 27 Great Blue Herons and 4 Ruddy Ducks were
visible along the shoreline.

There were small pockets of open water at the mouth of the Thames
River at Lighthouse Cove this afternoon. In addition to hundreds of
waterfowl there were 28 Great Blue Herons, 8 Double-crested
Cormorants, 3 Pied-billed Grebes, 3 Bald Eagles, 1 adult Glaucous
Gull and 1 first winter Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Lakeview Marina is located in Windsor along Riverside Drive at
Riverdale. Lighthouse Cove is about 6 km NNW of Tilbury on County Rd.
39 (reached off County Road 42). I'll post a photo of the Brewer's
Duck to the OFO photo page at www.ofo.ca/photos/
