'Tis the season for the deep-freeze doldrums - but a several good birds continue to be reported. There have been no reports of the male Barrow's Goldeneye on the Ottawa River at Remic rapids since the 19th, however a male of this species (perhaps the same bird) was on the Rideau River near the Rideau Tennis Club on the 27th. A male Wood Duck in Graham Creek in the Bayshore area and a male Green-winged Teal on the Rideau River at Strathcona Park both looked happy on the 28th and 20th respectively, and the 2 Wood Ducks and Hooded Merganser were still on the Rideau at Billings Bridge on the 28th. However, the Double-crested Cormorant was evidently not doing well on the ice at the Deschenes rapids and was last reported on the 21st. Five Wild Turkeys were at the Duck Club feeders on March Valley Rd. on the 28th, at least 2 adult Bald Eagles were seen in the Shirley's Bay / Riddell Rd. area on the 27th, two adult Peregrine Falcons have been observed hunting and roosting in the vicinity of the R. H. Coats building at Tunney's Pasture, and a Golden Eagle was seen along Hwy 148 near Luskville, Quebec, on the 21st. A few Ring-billed Gulls are still around - quite unusual for this time of year in Ottawa, and 1 Glaucous Gull was with several Great Black-backed Gulls on the Rideau between the Tennis Club and Hwy 417 on the 28th. A Great Horned Owl has been a fixture in the Britannia woods since at least the beginning of the year. On the 28th a Snowy Owl was still at French Hill & O'Toole Rds, 4 Snowys were in the Ste-Rose / Casselman area, the NORTHERN HAWK OWL was still present and easily viewed along Ch. McDonald west of Brennan's Hill, Quebec, and a lingering Belted Kingfisher was at Graham Creek. The most recent report of the Red-bellied Woodpecker at Evergreen Dr. in Bells Corners comes from the 16th, an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was seen along - where else? - the Kerwin Rd. trail on the 24th, and a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was discovered in Gatineau Park along a ski trail off the Fortune Parkway on the 18th. Two Lapland Longspurs were among several Horned Larks and Snow Buntings in the fields along Regimbald Rd. between Frank Kenny and O'Toole Rds. on the 27th, and approx.100 Longspurs were in the Ste-Rose / Casselman area the following day. A small number of Cedar Waxwings were in Britannia on the 25th and a dozen were still at the Hilda Rd. feeders on the 28th. Late sparrows included a Song Sparrow near Britannia Point on the 21st and the White-crowned Sparrow still at the Hilda Rd. feeders by Shirley's Bay the same day. Good numbers of Dark-eyed Juncos have been noted at feeders throughout the area. A couple of Red Crossbills were seen at Ch. Neely west of Brennan's Hill on the 28th, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were again observed in many locations, with males singing and performing courtship displays. Good numbers of Purple Finches and Pine Siskins were found in the Low - Poltimore area of Quebec on the 28th. And last but not least, a species that has not been reported at all so far this year in our area - 2 Evening Grosbeaks were at a feeder in St. Felix on the edge of the Larose Forest on the 27th. Thank you - Good Brrrrrrrrding! - End transcript
