Hi fellow Ontbirders,
I checked the Barcovan channel this chilly morning (5 Feb 2007) to
see if there was any open water, and there is one small patch that
was full of waterfowl. Highlights include a female Ruddy Duck (which
is my first ever mid-winter Ruddy from these parts), 4 Am. Coots (one
of which is covered with ice and is riding noticeably lower than the
other three ice-free coots), 1 Gadwall, plus more expected spp.
including Redhead, Com. Goldeneye, Black, Mallard, several hundred
Canada Geese and one Mute Swan (there were 300 here last week).
Directions: Barcovan channel is the western entrance to Wellers Bay
from Lake Ontario. To get there from Brighton, follow Cty. Rd. 64
east past the sewage lagoons and continue east until you reach the
Murray Canal bridge. Go over the bridge but instead of following the
main road to the left, continue straight (south) on the smaller road
which is the Barcovan Beach Rd. Follow this road for several km's
around a few bends when it eventually reaches the Lake Ontario
shore. Follow east along the shoreline until the road swings left
(away from the water) at a 90 degree angle. This bend is at the
Barcovan channel. There is little in the way of road shoulder here
and all the land is private and posted so please watch from the road
and avoid creating any parking congestion for the locals. Good luck,
Doug McRae
