After encountering several small groups of White-winged Crossbills
that were heard giving their flight calls within Palgrave Conservation
Area, I finally was able view one immature male just outside the C.A.,
perched on the top of a Spruce tree. To reach this location, follow
the directions below, then walk by foot north along the unplowed
section of Duffy's Lane for about 100m. Look in the coniferous swamp
to the west.
There are also spruce plantations and more coniferous swamps within
the C.A. where these birds can be found.
A Common Raven was also viewed in flight about 1 km. east of the parking area.
This area provides an accessible location within the GTA where some
species currently present in further locales such as Algonquin P.P.
can be found with some persistence.

Driving west bound on highway 7 observed an adult northern goshawk cruising low

On Saturday, February 10, between 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm, a Common Snipe was
seen by my wife, Joan, and me. The Common Snipe was beside the Paris to
Cambridge Rail Trail along the Grand River at the second kilometre post
north of the Willow street parking lot. The Snipe was originally on the
right side of the trail scratching in the leaves with 6 American Robins. It
flew to the left side of the trail and landed by the springs between the
trail and the river. We had good views of the Snipe from the trail for
approximately 30 minutes.
Directions: Exit 403 at Oak Park Road, go north to Paris Road; turn left
and travel along Paris Road crossing Governor's Road at the stop light (and
Tim Horton's); you will now be on Green lane; go north for one block to the
T intersection; turn left and follow Willow Street a few hundred yards until
you reach the Jean Rich Foundation Rail Trail parking lot on your right;
walk approximately 2 kilometres to the 2nd kilometre post and carefully
check the springs and streams on the river side of the trail.
Good Luck

A morning tour with several stalwart local naturalists again yielded NO Snowy Owls at the Bradford Marsh or Ravenshoe Rd. in Keswick today, but we did manage to scrounge up a few avian odds 'n ends. On Jane St. north of Hwy. 9 and just south of Woodchopper's Lane, we had some excellent looks at a mixed flock of about 80 Horned Larks and Snow Buntings
(a 60:40 % ratio) on Jane Street just south of Woodchopper's Lane. The birds were in the weedy fields on the east side of the road and often came to the gravelly road edge for roughage. At one point, in an effort to cross from the east side of the road to the west, they were suspended above our heads like children's mobiles, a thousand little wing pushes westward countered by a thousand wicked wind pushes eastward.
The often productive north end of Bathurst and, parallel to it, the north end of 2nd Concession produced nothing but blowing snow, but on Leslie Street just north of Holborn Rd. several members of our motorcade had good looks at two light-phase Rough-legged Hawks hunting on the west side of the road. When we turned west onto Ravenshoe Road we were treated to the spectacle of 100+ Snow Buntings undulating back and forth over the fields on the south side of the road across from the snow-covered ball diamonds.
After that we watched the road in front of us alternately disappear and reappear behind snow squalls from Cook's Bay. We drove into the mouth of the beast and were rewarded with nothing...But that, too, is birding. Many thanks to those who came out for this half-day trip...except the photographer guy for whom delayed gratification was far too tiresome.

Birds seem few and far between for me lately. A drive today, though,
did get me a lifer at long last, Lapland Longspur! I have been
chasing this species for a long time. There was a large flock of
small birds behind a barn, along a manure strip. They were moving
about so often that counting was difficult. All in all, there were
upwards of 250, Snow Buntings, Horned Larks and Lapland Longspurs.
The majority were the buntings. There were lots of larks, and
several longspurs. This location was southeast of Ottawa -
Ramseyville and MItch Owens Rds. A bit earlier, at Devine and Sand
Rds, west of Frank Kenny Rd were 2 other small flocks of Horned Larks.
Later on, I saw a flock of 12 or 13 Wild Turkeys on Earl Armstrong
Rd,near Limebank Rd south of our airport. They seem to travel around
in that area, being seen in several locations from time to time.
Happy Birding, Eve

On Saturday, Feb. 10, my son Sean and I saw 10 immature bald eagles in the "Eagle" tree on Rainham Rd. (rd # 3). There were 8 sitting in the tree and 2 flying in the area. One flew within 50 yards of us. Over the past 5 years of checking this area out, the eagles are either flying out over the lake or sitting in this particular tree. It seems to be their headquarters. You can see the eagles with binnoculars but a scope is best since the tree is about 400 yards from the road. The oldest eagle had a white head but still had a black band around his/her eyes.
In addition there were 2 light phase rough legged hawks soaring above the field north of the road and 6 light and dark phased rough legged hawks soaring around the Stelco Plant (3 miles west on Rainham Road).
Directions: From Jarvis, go west on Hwy 3. Turn right on the 1st concession which is Nanticoke Rd (County Rd # 55) and travel all the way to the lake. At the Ontario Power Plant is a traffic light at Rainham Rd. Turn left and go west on Rainham (County Rd #3). After you pass the first road there is a large woodlot in the field to your right. The eagle tree is at the far east side of the woodlot in the middle. There is a small driveway off Rainham where you can stop and this affords you the best view. A sign on the fencepost says "Imperial Oil - No Trespassing". Please heed the sign and you will not disturb the eagles.

An Indigo Bunting is coming to a feeder at the home of Bruce Kidd, east of
Peterborough. Bruce welcomes birders and suggests that they view the bird
from his living room. The bird has been coming regularly for about 3 weeks and
comes at all times of the day.
His farm can be reached by going north from Hwy 7 on Hwy 28 (old Hwy134) to

Greetings,
Yesterday around noon I went exploring that big bunch of pines located in
perch creek sort of between confederation and blackwell. When you view the
landfill this distinct large stand of pines is on the far side to the left.
Anyways, I located a roosting LONGEAREDOWL in there, and shortly after, a
GREAT HORNED OWL flew right in front of me. At the landfill its self there
were at least 3 ROUGH LEGGED HAWKS, at least 5 RED TAILED HAWKS, 1 KESTREL,
and 1 HARRIER.
good birdn'
