THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE, 7:00 pm, SUNDAY MARCH 11, 2007

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

During another week of abnormally low temperatures, it was not surprising
that there was no real change in the local birding scene. But the lack of
variety was somewhat mitigated by some "quality" birds.

A covey of 7 GRAY PARTRIDGE first found in mid-February, was rediscovered on
March 8th and was still present as of the 9th, on the north side of Garvin
Rd. just west of Shea Rd. near the town of Richmond. Single Bald Eagles
were reported from Brennan's Hill, Quebec on the 4th, the Glebe area on the
8th, and also near Hull, Quebec on the 9th. Single adult Glaucous Gulls were
among the mostly Great Black-backed and Herring Gulls on the ice at the Moodie Dr.
quarry pond near the Trail Rd. landfill on the 4th and on the Ottawa River
off Bate Island on the 8th, an immature Iceland Gull was with 3 Glaucous
Gulls off the Champlain bridge on the morning of the 11th, and a handful of
Ring-billed Gulls may have regretted returning so soon, when the temperature
dropped to the coldest on record for March 6 in Ottawa.

The NORTHERN HAWK OWL west of Brennan's Hill is still steadfastly on its
winter territory as of the 9th. Individual Barred Owls were noted along Hwy
148 at Breckenridge on the 3rd and in the Munster area on the 8th, at
least 2 Short-eared Owls were seen again hunting over the fields along Ch.
de la Riviere south of Breckenridge shortly after 5:00 pm on the 8th, and a
Northern Saw-whet Owl was found along the middle loop of the Jack Pine Trail
on the 11th.

A new report of a male Red-bellied Woodpecker came in today
the 11th, at a feeder off parking lot #4 at the west end of the Nortel
property at Carling Ave. and Moodie Dr. Those elusive northern woodpeckers
continue to make occasional appearances for lucky observers - a male
AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was seen along the Kerwin Rd. trail west of
Kanata on the 8th and a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was
found along the O'Brien Beach ski trail in Gatineau on the 7th.

Northern Shrike reports continue to be few and far between this season -
single birds were reported form the Hull Quebec area on the 9th and the Jack
Pine Trail on the 11th. One of our now-you-see-'em-now-you-don't Carolina
Wrens showed up again briefly at a suet feeder on Sherbourne Rd. in the
Carlingwood area on the 6th, and a few Lapland Longspurs were noted this
week, including 4 birds seen among small numbers of Horned Larks and Snow
Buntings on Brownlee Rd. off Eagleson Rd. on the 8th.

Thank you - Good Birding!
