Today at 3:00 i saw the adult Northern Shrike
at Malden Park, Windsor, this bird has been
there all winter.
It was flying and perching in the area between
the gravel road leading up the highest hill with
lots of phagmites and sumac bushes and the
toboggon hill.
Also seen was a Fox Sparrow at the north east
corner by the Hospital.
A Eastern Towhee was found in the wood at the
west end of the small pond

Malden Park is situated in West Windsor, north of
EC Row expressway an old landfill site.
Access from Malden Road or Matchette Road north
of the Ojibway Nature Centre.

I walked through the Springbank parks area of London this afternoon.
Only regulars were produced from the garden complex to the Guy
Lombardo bridge. After that things picked up right where the cemetery
borders the walkway. Several Golden Crowned Kinglets and a Red
Bellied Woodpecker just off the cemetery. Further along a Red Tailed
Hawk flying in low, landed in one of the large conifers in the
cemetery. Dark Eyed Junco still forage in the undergrowth.
Looping up to the edge where the houses meet the park I found a Song
Sparrow and Fox Sparrow at a bird feeder.
I found my 2nd Eastern Phoebe, which have been here since at least
   Mar. 22
Returning home along Springbank Road I spotted a Red Breasted Nuthatch
foraging in the large conifers of the cemetery grounds. I don't see
many RB Nuthatches so I'm quite thrilled to have one close by :-) . I
have strong intuition that the RB Nuthatch and RB Woodpecker are
resident birds as I have seen both from my apartment window since
January when I arrived here. The woodpecker has been churring away and
one can only hope that they nest in the area.
It has been great weather so all you birders that need encouragement,
go to your local park or woodlot and I'm sure there will be something
   to see.
   Good Birding,
   Mark Conlon
   London, ON

The Springbank Park Complex can be found centring around Springbank
Drive and Wonderland Road. Woodland Cemetery is just east of this
   intersection.

This morning I spotted the first pair of Tree Swallows I have seen in =
the Bradford area this spring. They were along Canal Road just east of =
Jonkman's Corners on the wires along the canal. Some Hooded Mergansers =

this area is east of Hwy 400 almost to Hwy 11 along Canal Road south and =

There have been Tundra Swans flying and foraging in large/small flocks just
south of the town of Ayr since Monday, March 26th. Early this evening I
spotted a large flock on the east side of Ayr Road as you head south towards
Paris, in a corn field between Drumbo Road and West Dumfries Road (close to
a farm house). Another small flock was seen on the west side of Nith Road
between Drumbo & West Dumfries. They move about, so if you don't find them
there, they are likely in another corn field (often with a small "pond") in
the area - you just have to drive around on some of the side roads to find
them.

In the past when they've come thru Ayr, we've found they normally stick
around for about a week.

Thickson's Woods was full of song at midday today, March 27. I counted =
at least 5 Fox Sparrows in the northeast corner of the woods, but there =
could have been 8 or even more as they were very actively feeding and =
moving about, 2 of them in full ringing song. Song Sparrows were =
everywhere, dozens of them. There were 2 spring-loaded Winter Wrens near =
the record book, one giving floating snatches of song. A very noisy =
Northern Flicker explored old nestholes, and an Eastern Phoebe sang from =
the edge of Thickson Road, near the Nature Reserve sign. A small flock =
of Golden-crowned Kinglets may have been overwintering birds but one =
male was singing as it foraged. Spring.

Directions: Thickson's Woods Nature Reserve is at the foot of Thickson =
Road in Whitby, Exit 412 from Hwy 401. Go south on Thickson Road, past =
the traffic lights, and turn left (east) at the north edge of the woods. =
Park only on the north side of the road which here is the Waterfront =
Trail.

Good morning

Yesterday Ian Cannell and I birded the Toronto Islands and despite the =
fog that covered the lake all day and the islands most of the time we =
found some nice birds and below is a few of the high lights. All of the =
waterfowl were seen either in the lagoons or the harbour side of The =
Islands.

Pied-billed and Horned Grebes, White-winged Scoters, Canvasbacks, =
Ring-necked Ducks, all 3 Mergansers, the usual waterfowl, Cooper's Hawk, =
Wilson's Snipe, 12 Downy Woodpeckers, 11 N. Flickers, 3 E. Phoebes, 13 =
Tree Swallows, 36 B-C Chickadees, 6 Brown Creepers, Carolina Wren, 2 =
singing Winter Wrens, 20 A. Tree Sparrows, Field Sparrow, 3 Savannah =
Sparrows, 21 Fox Sparrows (some singing), 237 Song Sparrows (lots of =
singing) (probably under counted), Swamp Sparrow, 21 N. Cardinals, 37 =
Golden-crowned Kinglets, and 7 Killdeer as well as the usual birds for a =
total of 54 for the day.

A great day to be out and to top it off we had a great close view of a =
Mink that wasn't aware of us.

I kind of knew that it would be a Sparrow day when I left home and =
walked through a plaza up here at 5:10am on my way to my bus and found =
17 Song Sparrows on the sidewalks in front of the stores.

Directions:-
TORONTO ISLANDS - WINTER SCHEDULE

(Wards Island to Hanlans Point - without side trips is 5 km) To get to =
the Toronto Islands from Queen and Yonge Streets on the TTC. If your on =
the subway southbound stay on it and get off at Union Station, walk =
south about 1 km to the ferry docks at the foot of Bay Street at Queens =
Quay and you are there. If in an auto on the Gardener Expressway or on =
Lakeshore Blvd, then exit at Bay Street and drive south to Queens Quay, =
there are lots of parking lots nearby (fee).

There is a fee for using the island ferries ($6.00 adult / $3.50 for =
seniors & students) and to find out the sailing times you can phone =
(416) 392-8193 or check at =
http://www.toronto.ca/parks/island/springschedule.htm There are =
washrooms on the islands as well as the city side at the ferry docks and =
you can pick up a schedule at the docks or check on line.

The 1st boat to Wards Island (my preferred starting point) is 6:35 am =
and the 2nd is 7:00 am Monday to Friday.=20

The 1st is at 6:35 am and the 2nd boat is at 7:15 am on Saturday, Sunday =
and Holidays.

The 1st boat to Hanlans Point is 9:00 am - Monday to Friday only but be =
aware that the last boat from Hanlans is at 3:45pm, miss it and you have =
to walk all the way back to Wards Island.

There are no boats to Centre Island in the Winter

If arriving in early am you must obtain your ticket from a machine just =
inside the gate so be sure to have $1.00 and $2.00 and/or 25 cent coins =
before you arrive at the docks as there is no place to get change and =
the machine does not make change. (There is a change machine there if =
you want to chance it).

There are coffee shops across from the ferry docks in the building on =
the northwest corner and they are open early.

PS - There is a map of the Islands at each of the Island side ferry =
docks and the City side entrance to the docks.
