Common Loons, Double-crested Cormorants, and Pied-billed Grebes all arrived this week. Most of the Tundra Swans have taken off now, but there are still a few hanging around and moving through, and while the local Sandhill Cranes have paired off, migrants are still passing through. Lee Brown's is usually full of waterfowl as is Big Creek and the Inner Bay, and while the Eurasian Wigeon has not been seen in a few days, it is probably hanging around somewhere in the area. The first Virginia Rail was seen in the marshes on the north side of Long Point Prov. Park on Thursday and a Lesser Yellowlegs was seen in the same area on Friday. The marshes there, at Big Creek and the Crown Marsh are all alive with birds these days, with numbers of Wilson's Snipe displaying all day long, the first Marsh Wren seen on Thursday, Swamp Sparrows back on territory, small numbers of Tree Swallows patrolling over the marshes, and two Vesper Sparrows seen this morning in the Crown Marsh. Bonaparte's Gulls have been pushing through in good numbers over the last few days and flocks of them should be checked for Little Gulls, and two Glaucous Gulls were seen on Thursday in the provincial park. A big push of Slate-colored Juncos and Northern Flickers happened this week, with the entire point littered with them, as well Golden-crowned Kinglets and Brown Creepers have put through their first push. The first Pine Warbler was heard at Old Cut on Friday and the first Field Sparrow was heard singing today. Directions: Exit the 401 near Woodstock at Hwy 59 and follow this south all the way to Lake Erie. Just before the lake at Lakeshore/Front Rd, turn right to get to Lee Brown's and to check the farm fields for waterfowl and other migrants. Continue south on 59 and you will see Big Creek on your right, the Inner Bay on your left, and the provincial park is at the end of the road. The Crown Marsh is on the north side of Hwy 59 and there is a small parking lot on the north side near Pines Ave and Old Cut is on Old Cut Blvd. just before the provincial park. A pair has had a nest on top of one of the roadside hydro poles for the last couple of years. I assume that the pair has returned. I don't whether the Osprey that Paul O'Toole reported is one of these. The Lennox and Addington Generating Station is on Highway 33 about 10 kilometres west of Bath and about 25 kilometres south of Napanee. Chester Gryski [EMAIL PROTECTED]
