Hi Fellow Birders,

There were 42 GREAT BLUE HERONS spread on a collection of 35 nests up
high in the trees in the HERONRY/ROOKERY on the corner of
Taunton/Steeles Rd. & Scarborough/Pickering Town line. Do not go too
close to the trees of this colony without wearing a hard hat. Adults
are flying in all kinds of branches with some of them the size of a
meter. They may be dropped and I would not wish you to have one of them
land on your head. They can best be seen from a driveway on
Scarborough/Pickering Town line through a scope. Very entertaining.
Some were building their nests and re-arranging some of the logs they
flew in and others were standing on top of each other copulating.
Should be a good flock of birds after the 28 days of incubation. The
fledglings leave the nest about 8 weeks after they hatch. They love
fish, frogs, snakes and small mammals. So when the time comes and you
don't think you need a hard hat. Watch out for the frog bones, chunks
of rotted fish or some other unsavory tidbits that may come tumbling
down when the adult birds are feeding their young which were hatched
from the 3 - 7 pale blue or greenish eggs that were laid.

1 MALE WILD TURKEY on Halls Rd. south west of Whitby by the entrance of
the northern path leading to the first observation platform. After
stopping my car and opening my trunk for some treats he was very curious
and came up very close to me. After leaving him enjoy the food and
coming back from the observation platform he put on a show for me. With
breast outburst, head drawn back which had now turned a pale light blue
color from a brown rusty shade, wingtips dragging, and tail feathers
spread into a magnificant fan, he strutted from left to right and back
again behind my car and in a timeless ritual designed to lure female
turkeys into his private harem of which there were not any. He gobbled
in spurts from time to time with a mellow vibrato gobblings as a
dominant male.

Other species sighted in Cranberry Marsh from the southern platform
closer to the lake were:

NORTHERN SHOVELER (6)
BUFFLEHEAD (12)
GREATER SCAUP (4)
YELLOW SHAFTED NORTHERN FLICKER (1)

1 GREAT HORNED OWL was perched on one of the highest branches of a tree
in Thickson Woods once described as "The tiger of the woods" this
morning around 10:00 A.M. Indeed a superbly adapted night time hunter
was watching me. Keen of eye, acute of ear, and silent on the wing, it
is equipped with powerful talongs for striking and gripping prey and a
sharp hooked beak for tearing flesh from its kill. It was perched on a
branch without any fear. On rare occasions, the bird has even been known
to swoop in and attack people wearing fur hats, apparently mistaking the
pelts for living prey. Hold on to your hat and watch out.

Directions: Take Taunton/Steeles Rd. to Scarborough/Pickering Town line
and turn on to the Town line and park on a dam leading into a field
facing the HERONRY/ROOKERY.

Go to Hall Rd., Cranberry Marsh

Take Thickson Rd. to the lake and park on water front trail

Folks:

For those of you that don't monitor the MICH-List, here is a good bird =
that
is close to home. At least close to Sarnia, Ont. With a nice long =
weekend
coming up, some may want to take a little trip. And with the bird =
hanging
out near a church, you can tell your wife you=92re going to church for =
Easter.
Don't forget your passport. If you would like to see the pics of the =
bird, I
have included the link in this email

http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html

My apologies, Mark, if this is not to Ontbirds standards, but wanted to =
get
the word out.

Good Birding, Happy Easter,

Rick Thornton,
Exeter Ont=20

Birders,

Thanks to Tom Dennis for finding this great bird. Thanks to Pat Burden =
for
forwarding Tom's photos to me yesterday. Thanks to the Cornerstone =
Church
for opening their restroom and providing coffee this morning!

When I arrived just after 8 a.m. the bird was present despite the rain. =
It
was gone for perhaps 30-minutes around 9 a.m. but was almost constantly
findable up until I left at 10:45 a.m. Everyone who came while I was =
there
got to see the bird. It seems to forage in a somewhat circular, =
clockwise
pattern, starting across the road (North Road) to the east, then coming
southeast to a stand of bare deciduous trees on the south side of the
church, circling around behind the church to a row of small spruce trees =
on
the north edge of the property, then back to smaller deciduous trees and
spruces lining the driveway to the east of the church (sometimes with a =
stop
in a small marsh on the property). Sometimes the bird spent time on the
ground in the field to the north of the church. I watched four "laps" =
like
this while I was there.

Coming from I-69, take the Wadhams Road exit and go north to just past =
the
bridge over the Black River and turn right onto River Road. River Road =
makes
two shallow bends left and becomes North Road. After a little over a =
mile,
you will see Krafft Road on the right, and the church is immediately =
after
this on the left. Mr. Dennis's wife has posted "Welcome Birders" on the =
sign
out front.

Can't miss it!

Every day, the hummingbird eats its own weight in food.
You may wonder how it weighs the food. It doesn't.
It just eats another hummingbird.
