They were on the northwest side of the corner of Oak Street and the 12th Side road (Williams Road), just south of Williams Nursery. Good birding yesterday at Hillman Marsh. All kinds of Northern Shoveller's, American Coots and Ruddy Ducks. We also had a few Wilson's Snipe (6), Mallard, Wood Duck, Blue & Green Winged Teal, Gadwall, Am. Widgeon, Bufflehead, all three Mergs, Canada Geese, Mute Swans, and heard a rail that shall remain hidden. Possibly a Sora, but it wasn't calling often, and would not come out. It was snowing so I can't blame it! Williams Road is the first intersection east from Leamington on CTY RD. 34 (Talbot Road East). Hillman Marsh can be reached from Leamington by driving east on Seacliffe Drive, or from Wheatley by coming west along CTY 34 and turning south onto CTY 37. They were on the rocks above the Horseshoe Falls about 15 yard downstream from the arched login front of a triangular rock (as seen from the third Three Sister's Island of Goat Island). If Canadians park at the greenhouse, walk out to the river and look in the general direction of the sunken barge they will probably see them if they are still there. Upstream from the islands were three Little Gulls among "thousands of Bonapart's". One of the Little Gulls was entering summer plumage and had a black hood. It was associating with a RED-NECKED GREBE quite far from shore. A scope is a necessity. I also had a brief glimpse at the leucistic HORNED GREBE. Other waterfowl incluced RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, LONG-TAILED DUCKS, COMMON LOON, COMMON GOLDENEYE, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, and a distant raft of SCAUP. I had a brief look at a distant white-winged gull, which I believe was a GLAUCOUS GULL. As I left an EASTERN PHOEBE landed in the scrub near the lookout. I have received photos of the Western Grebe and leucistic Horned Grebe, and will be uploading them to the OFO Rare Bird Photo Page today. www.ofo.ca/photos Directions: From the QEW at Oakville, exit at Bronte Rd. Go south to Lakeshore Blvd. and turn right (west). Turn left (south) on West St. (not West River St.) and go to the foot of the road. There adjacent to the cemetary is lookout from which the birds can be seen. Good Birding. This is Chris Lewis reporting. A sudden step back to winter-like conditions slowed things down a bit this week, but the birds continue to arrive and several "firsts of the season" were reported. The most noteworthy bird was NOT a common seasonal migrant, at least not for the Ottawa area. A male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD showed up in the community of Forest Park, Embrun, this week and was most recently reported on April 7th, on Manitou St. - in exactly the same location where most likely the same bird wintered last year. The agricultural fields both east and west of Ottawa continued to host nearly overwhelming flocks of Canada Geese, a blue morph Snow Goose was found near Carp west of Ottawa on the 7th, and a pair of Redhead were seen along Russell Rd. at Johnston Rd. east of Bourget on the 7th. Other waterfowl species were low in number, but most of the expected puddle ducks and diving ducks have now been reported. A Pied-billed Grebe was seen on the Jock River near the Twin Elm bridge on the 6th, the 1st report of Black-crowned Night-Herons was of a group of four flying west up the Ottawa River near Rockcliffe on the 3rd, and a small movement of raptors occurred this week - Turkey Vulture reports continue to come in, single Bald Eagles were seen (and seen off) by the American Crows along the Jock River and at Mud Lake in the Britannia Conservation Area on the 6th, and the crows also took care of a Red-shouldered Hawk near Dunrobin on March 31st. On April 7th, a total of 15 SANDHILL CRANES was probably a record high spring count for the Ottawa area - 13 were observed in the fields along Milton Rd. northeast of Carlsbad Springs, and 2 were in the fields on the east side of Carp Rd. between Donald B. Munro and March Rds. A late evening venture to the Munster area on the 6th produced the first local report of Wilson's Snipe. Another new arrival on the 6th and 7th was Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, in quite a variety of locations. More Eastern Bluebirds and Eastern Meadowlarks were noted on the 31st, and the first seasonal reports of Fox Sparrow and Rusty Blackbird came in on April 6th. Thank you, Happy Easter, and Good Birding! - End transcript
