I received a couple of reports of good-sized flocks of Greater Snow Geese
in the Bourget area on Easter Sunday. At Cobbs Creek, just east of town,
Paul Schoening had a couple of thousand while Ian Clark reported 10s of
thousands there later. This is the largest grouping to date. Scattered
small flocks were observed in various other locations.

To get to Bourget, take Hwy 417 east of Ottawa to the Vars exit. Head north
about 7 km to the T-junction at Russell Road and turn right (east). Bourget
is about 25 km. Cobbs Creek is just east of town along the same road.

Hi All,

I got a call from my folks late this afternoon indicating they'd found a =
HORNED GREBE at the Mitchell Wetland lagoons. I took a quick jaunt out =
to the lagoons this evening and found that there was actually TWO horned =
grebes swimming together....one in complete alternate (breeding) =
plummage and the other mostly complete (possibly a pair?). They were =
easily seen in the last cell at the furthest back left of the property. =
They were still there when I left at 6:45 p.m.

I also spotted a couple of male Tree Swallows (my first for the season) =
cruising low over the water of the same cell...hard to believe given the =
snow still on the ground from the last several days.

There was also a good variety of waterfowl in this same cell:

Mallard - 20+
Gadwall - 6
American Wigeon - 5 pair
Pintail - 1 pair
Northern Shoveler - 1 maybe 2 pair =20
Ruddy Duck - 20+
Canvasback - 3 pair
Redhead - 5 pair
Ringed-necked Duck - 20+
Lesser Scaup - 30+
Common Goldeneye - 2 pair
Bufflehead - 40+
American Coot - 3

Thanks to Ev and Doug Brown and Liz and Eric Jeffery for passing along =
their sightings. :)

Good Birding!

At 3:10 or so Tuesday, a Merlin was perched 10 metres up the
tree north of 293 Chapel St., Sandy Hill, Ottawa. This after a
Peregrine Falcon seen yesterday at the 417 footbridge across the
   Rideau River!

   Nick von Maltzahn
Directions (adapted from Neily World): From Highway 417 (The
Queensway) take exit 118 (follow the signs for Nicholas Street). Avoid
doing this during rushhour! Go northwest 1.3 km to Laurier Avenue and
turn right or northeast onto it. Proceed ca. 800m and Chapel is at
some lights, where turn north half a block.

Hello Ontbirders,

This afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Ron Pittaway saw two Loggerhead Shrikes
on the Carden Alvar on Wylie Road in the hawthorn pasture behind
Bluebird Box 10. They were perched low, one on a mullein stalk and
the other on a hawthorn branch. The shrikes can be seen well from the
public road. This is the best spot in Ontario to see Loggerhead Shrikes.

On Wylie Road, Ron also saw Eastern Meadowlarks, Eastern Bluebirds
and Wilson's Snipe, so the grassland birds are returning.

Directions
From County Road 48 in Kirkfield proceed north on Kirkfield Road 6
past the Kirkfield Liftlock to McNamee Road and turn right, then turn
almost immediately left onto Wylie Road. Proceed north 1.8 km to
Bluebird Box 10 on your left and scan the pasture to the west behind
the box. Wylie Road is passable but muddy with a few potholes.

For more information about Birding the Carden Alvar, see the OFO

Good birding,

Jean
