G'Day Birders, A quick stop at the Beaverton Harbour this morning yielded a pleasant surprise. A mature BALD EAGLE was perched on a tree branch on the north side of the spit at the mouth of the Beaver River. I had time to get a couple of photographs then it was chased off by a crow it flew to within 40 m of me. Unbelievably, my battery died just as it left the tree!!! I also saw BONAPARTE GULLS, HERRING GULLS, a BELTED KINGFISHER, COMMON MERGANSERS, COMMON GOLDENEYES, BUFFLEHEADS, and as I was leaving, an OSPREY flew overhead.
Beaverton is about 50 minutes north of Whitby following hwy. 12 or 70 minutes north-east of Toronto following the 404 to Davis Drive east then hwy 48 north to Durham 23. Once in the thriving metropolis of Beaverton drive toward the lake (west) on Simcoe St. until it ends at a parking lot of a nice little breakfast spot (Hobbes Hollow) and the boat launch. Park here and walk out to the pier. You may also see a mink hunting along the shoreline if you are lucky.
