                    PARK FLIGHT MIGRATORY BIRD PROGRAM


                         INTERNATIONAL INTERNSHIP
                    Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio
               & Point Pelee National Park, Ontario, Canada


The  Park  Flight  Migratory  Bird Program works to protect migratory birds
that  share their habitat between US and other national parks and protected
areas   in   the  Western  Hemisphere,  through  activities  such  as  bird
monitoring,   outreach   and  education  programs,  and  opportunities  for
technical  assistance  and  cooperation.  The  Park  Flight  Program  is  a
partnership   between  the  National  Park  Service  (NPS),  National  Park
Foundation,  American  Airlines,  National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and
the   University   of  Arizona.   Working  through  the  NPS  International
Volunteers  in  Parks  Program, biologists and educators from other Western
Hemisphere  countries  assist  with  Park  Flight  efforts in U.S. national
parks.   These  international  internships  give  the  opportunity  for  an
exchange  of  knowledge  and  experience  including  science,  culture  and
language.

Candidates  for  the  Cuyahoga—Point  Pelee  internship  must have Canadian
citizenship  and residency.  Duties and required skills are outlined below.
Candidates must be able to apply the skills gained during the internship to
bird  conservation  efforts in national parks or protected areas in Canada.
The  Park  Flight Program will reimburse the intern with US $700.00 a month
for food and other expenses, will cover expenses of the required J -1 visa,
and  will make all the necessary arrangements.  Housing will be provided at
both  park  locations.   Interested  and  qualified  candidates from Canada

Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio & Point Pelee National Park, Ontario,
Canada
·     One intern for 12 weeks, June 11 – August 31, 2007
·     Intern will spend portions of the total internship in each park to
assist with development of coordinated bird and butterfly monitoring in
both parks

      Specific activities will include:
·     Developing potential protocols for a fall migration bird monitoring
program in both locations using established bird monitoring techniques
·     Coordinating and training volunteers to conduct bird monitoring in
one or both parks as time allows
·     Coordinating volunteers to monitor monarch butterfly abundance and
breeding success in Cuyahoga Valley National Park
·     Investigate the possibility of developing protocol for monitoring
monarch butterfly migration through both parks
·     Creating an inventory of educational resources available related to
monarch butterfly migration and review local school board curriculum at
both parks for potential links
·     Providing formal presentations to birding organizations, public
audiences, and park staffs about the internship and the Park Flight
Migratory Bird Program.

      Experience/skills needed:
·     Experience with bird monitoring (point counts or area searches) or
good bird identification skills
·     Ability or desire to work with volunteers
·     Ability or desire to give public presentations
·     A current, valid driver’s license is required; a personal vehicle
with insurance coverage is desirable but not required
