Last Tuesday, 24 April, a rare dark morph Broad-winged Hawk was
photographed by Barry Cherriere at the Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch
(Beamer CA) near Grimsby. See photo link below. We sent Barry's
photos to hawk expert Brian Wheeler, author of several handbooks on
hawk identification. Brian said, "I do not think there is photo
documentation of a verifiable dark morph Broad-winged Hawk from this
far east prior to this." Brian further commented on its age and
plumage. "In the right wing and probably on left wing too, secondary
8 looks to be narrow subterminally with a faded border of a retained
juvenal feather and probably makes this bird a two year old."
