Hi all,
It was a somewhat cool and not too promising morning with a stiff
northeast wind blowing when Blake Mann and I met ~ 35 OFO birders at 8:00
am. Friday evening had been virtually devoid of birds but in our early
morning scouting of the South Point Trail we did locate some birds and were
hopeful for a decent day, especially after meeting Steve Charbonneau and
Larry Cornellis, who shared some of their sightings/locations with us.
We spent ~2.5 hours walking this trail and almost everyone had great
views of ~10 warblers(including N.Parula, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia,
Black-throated Blue) and 3 vireos - White-eyed,Yellow-throated,
Blue-headed). We did a quick(very quiet) tour of Tulip Tree trail before
lunching at V.C.
At 1:00 we re-assembled to drive to the maintenance area and walk down
Harrison trai lto the Pony Barns and Log Pond adding 7 more warbler sp. with
a stunning Cerulean(often below eye-level), Bay-breasted and later a Cape
May Warbler definite crowd-pleasers.
We saw an imm. Bald Eagle,then heard a Marsh Wren and Virginia Rail at
the lookout on the Marsh trail and then wrapped up a very good day's
birding.
Our total count was 78 and some other highlights/favourites were -
Red-headed and Red-bellied Woodpecker, Eastern Kingbird, Veery,
Hermit and Wood Thrush, Black-throated Green, Blackburnian and Pine Warbler,
Am. Redstart and C. Yellowthroat, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Baltimore Oriole.
