Once again we have a pair of Red-necked Grebes nesting on an anchored
floating tire in the Bronte Outer Harbour Marina. The nest is in the same
area as in recent years but a bit closer to the boaters' dock than last
year. There is another tire at the east end of the grebe area but it is not
occupied. This tire looks too high out of the water to work as a grebe
platform.
There was at least one Forster's Tern flying around the marina. In addition
there were several Common Terns and about 30 Caspian Terns. There is yet no
sign of the Cliff Swallows returning to nest under the eaves of the
Lighthouse Restaurant. Most of last year's nests have been taken over by
House Sparrows.
At 6 PM there was no sign of the Laughing Gull that Mark Jennings phoned us
about at 4 PM. He said it was flying west then.
Directions: Exit the QEW at Bronte Rd. (Oakville) and go to the lake.
Turn left at Ontario Street and park near the east end of the street. The
grebe nest is at the east end of the harbour near the Lighthouse Restaurant.
