A south to south-west breeze brought many migrants into the Park last
night. A great day for birding in the Park.

Birding was rather busy at the tip with a small "reverse migration"
persisting until about 9 am. Involved were many warblers, tanagers,
orioles, and blackbirds among others. Species at the tip included common
warblers and also Canada, Mourning, Kentucky, Yellow-breasted Chat, and
Cerulean. Also Scarlet Tanagers, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, and
Bobolink. A few Red-headed and Red-bellied Woodpeckers were here and there
at the tip. Sparrows included Savannah, Lincoln's as well as the more
commonly seen White-crowned and White-throated. A couple of Little Gulls
were reported with the many Bonaparte Gulls near the tip.

In Tilden's Woods, the female Summer Tanager was again reported, and
Hooded, Kentucky, and Worm-eating Warblers, amongst many other warbler
species.
Also noted were many thrushes, Veery, Swainson's and Wood Thrush, noted.

Parula were noted, including one south of the Visitor Centre on the
Woodland Nature Trail. Also on that trail, a Louisianna and several
Northern Waterthrushes were reported.

Along the road to the tip, from the Visitor Centre many sparrows and
thrushes were found. Also a Tennessee Warbler was singing and Blue-winged
Warbler was reported.

Someone reported that there are Yellowlegs, Black-bellied Plover and Least
Sandpiper at the shorebird cell at Hillman's Conservation Area.

Hello Ontbirders

I heard from Jim Fairchild about a WILLET at Cranberry Marsh this
morning, so headed over to have a look. The bird was still there when I
left at noon. It cannot be seen from Hall's Road in its current
location. You have to view it from the southern platform on the east
side of the marsh (the newer platform with the blue rails). You access
this from the east side of Lynde Shores Conservation Area. From the
platform look to the west side of the marsh and just a little bit south,
for a small mud bar. Also present in the same area as the Willet were 1
DUNLIN, 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and a few peeps which were out of range
for me to id. In other areas of the marsh, PIED-BILLED GREBE, lots of
COOTS, SORAS calling.

Thickson's Woods had an influx of thrushes this mornings, including
HERMIT, VEERY, SWAINSON'S and WOOD THRUSH. There was a good variety but
low numbers of warblers this morning, including a report of a
BLUE-WINGED WARBLER (I didn't see it). Also WARBLING VIREO, GRAY
CATBIRD, BROWN THRASHER, EASTERN TOWHEE and a FIELD SPARROW in the meadow.

Directions for the Willet:

From the 401 in Whitby, exit at Salem Rd. Go south to Bayley and turn
east (left). Continue past Lakeridge Road and Hall's Rd. The parking lot
for Lynde Shores is on the south side of the road. (Paid parking, $2
for the day). Cross the bridge and then follow the trail that leads off
on the east side of the road. It eventually comes out at the old wooden
platform, keep going a little further south to the newer blue railed
viewing platform. Bring your scope. (note that although walking straight
down the private road would be much shorter, it is signed for authorized
vehicles only and no pedestrians.) When you get to the platform look to
the far west side, a little south of where you are standing for a strip
of mud. The willet and a few other shorebirds were there.

Directions for Thickson's Woods.

Thickson's Woods is located at the south end of Thickson Road in Whitby.
The entrance to the meadow and woodlot is from the waterfront trail,
east of Thickson Road.

Good birding
Carol

Spotted 5-6 White-crowned sparrows this morning at around 9am. They are
migrating through and I will try and track how long they stay for.

And as a side note, I saw my first 5 goslings this morning.
