Remember: The Carden Nature Festival is June 15-17, with 30 trips, workshops and activities for every interest, from Birding by Ear to Wildflower Photography, Butterflies and Dragonflies in the Field, and Canoeing local marshes. There's still time to register at www.cardenguide.com/Festival
The unmistakable "bee-buzz-buzz-buzz" of the Golden-winged Warbler's
song was heard often for some minutes this morning on Wylie Road, in the
bushes just south of the Sedge Wren Marsh on the east side of the road.
The property is fenced and posted, and I had to go on my way before
making a visual ID, so I can't say that it wasn't a Blue-winged or
Brewster's using the Golden-winged's song. Whichever it turns out to be
it's certainly worth contending with all the other cars on the "Birder's
Highway" otherwise known as Wylie Road.
The Carden Important Bird Area is about 150 km. from downtown Toronto.
Take Highway 48 to Kirkfield, and at the 4 corners turn north on
Kawartha Lakes 6 (an IBA sign directs you). Proceed under the Kirkfield
Lift Lock and continue to McNamee Road -- turn right, and then quickly
left onto Wylie Road. The Sedge Wren Marsh is about 2 km. from the foot
of Wylie. Note that farmers are putting cattle out on the land now, so
allow enough room for trailers to get by when you park.
