While mountain biking today in the Northumberland Forest today, we ran into
a British cyclist who was listening to a woodpecker. We were surprised to
see that it was a female black backed woodpecker, flaking bark off a dead
jack pine. There was a lot of bark flaked, suggesting it has been in
residence for some time.
The bird was quite unafraid, like many black backs. It was 200 metres along
the Green "A" loop trail (description follows, but you'll need to refer to
the maps posted through the forest on signboards at major trail junctions,
and online at www.hedney.com/freewheelers/Maps/N_F_Ski_Trails.PDF. ).

Directions: Exit highway 401 at County Road 45 (exit 474), at Cobourg; go
north for less than 10 minutes to Beagle Club Road : there are signs for the
Northumberland Forest ski trails at the corner. Turn left (west) and drive
the very short distance to the ski trail access road; drive in, park and
walk the trails or fire roads to what the map calls post 7, where the green
"A" and "B" loops split. The bird was about 200 metres along the "A" loop.
