As of 2:30 p.m., the Prothonotary Warbler was still present in the
vicinity of the Bronte Bluffs parking lot. It sings loudly,
periodically, but as it generally sits motionless when singing it can
be almost impossible to observe in the thick foliage. I finally had a
good look while it was feeding in a large Silver Maple about 25 ft.
above the ground, in the area between the parking lot and Sovereign
House.

Directions: Bronte Bluffs are accessed from West River St., the first
street south of
Lakeshore Rd and west of the bridge over Bronte Creek. From QEW go south on
Bronte Road to Lakeshore Rd. turn right and cross the bridge.

The Huron Fringe Birding Festival has come to end for another year. One hike
our "Bird Till You Drop" our all day trek, from 6:00am to 10:00pm, lead by
Michael Carlson ended up with 127 species for the trip. Also on the last
Sunday, a hike on the town line produced a Dickcissel.
Directions as per James Turland,
For those of you who would like to see it, head east from North Bruce on the
town line towards Paisley, for 10 klics, turn left on sideroad 33 /34 and it
was in the half alive elm tree just around the corner on the right.
A total of 166 species for the festival were recorded with 10 new ones on
the last weekend, Dickcissel, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Northern Rough-winged
Swallow, Sharp-shinned Hawk, American Kestrel, Lesser Yellowlegs, Solitary
Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Wilson;s Phalarope and Red-throated Loon.

Our 10th Annual festival was a huge success and the attendance was as
expected with approximately 300 birders and Naturalists in Saugeen Shores
over the last 10 days.
The many hikes and presentations were just what everyone wanted and alll
went away with nothing but praise for the organizing committee.
Most of our events were held in MacGregor Point Provincial Park, which is
the headquarters. Our all day hikes around Saugeen Shores and up the Bruce
Peninsula, proved to be very suceessful as well. The park was full of eager
birders looking for that elusive warbler, or searching out the many
wildflowers that were in bloom and even that fast darting dragonfly or
damselfly.
Our bird hikes, wildflower hikes, butterfly hikes, tree identification hikes
and insect hikes were all well attended. The evening programs and some
afternoon presentations allowed attendees to relax after a vigorous morning
hike and listen to and view many wonderful slides shows. We had
presentations on moths, bats, flying squirrels, birds of prey, owl prowls,
night sounds, naturalized gardens, last billion years in Grey and Bruce
counties just to mention a few.
Keep us in mind for next year and be sure to check the
Friends of MacGregor Park website early in the new year 2008 fo our schedule
of events and registration information.
