Hi Ontbirders:

This morning at about 9:00 am, following an urban breeding bird count in
eastern Ottawa, I encountered a singing male Palm Warbler in the Mer Bleue bog.
This was an adult western form (non-yellow) male who sang repeatedly from a
small tamarak tree just off the boardwalk. The bog is similar to its more usual
breeding habitat further north in Canada. This species is known to breed in
this extensive bog, but it is not easy to find because of the limited access on
the boardwalk.

  Directions:

From Highway 416 east of Ottawa, exit at Walkley Road and head east.
Following a sharp bend the road heads uphill. At the top of the Hill, turn left
on the Ridge Road and follow it to the end where it enters the Mer Bleue
conservation area parking lot. Take the trail to the boardwalk and the bird was
about half way around on the boardwalk.

After running an errand to Bradford this afternoon, I made a quick detour on my
way back to Newmarket, turning north from Yonge Street onto Bathurst Street in
order to check Hochreiter Road for birds. To my relief, I found the usually
lunar landscape of Hochreiter freshly graded and easily driveable, making a
trip to its western end downright comfy. I did not get the Least Bittern I was
looking for there, but I did squeeze in some pleasant "drive-thru" birding as I
slowly drove along: Firstly, right beside the road on the south side, was a
family of 11 Common Moorhens (male, female, and 9 offspring), then I flushed an
American Bittern only moments later. Marsh Wrens were singing in two places
and I heard a Virginia Rail calling from the bullrushes. Added to this was the
sweet song of a White-throated Sparrow emanating from the swampy woodlot east
of the rushes.

Cruelly, this single lane road with very good marsh habitat (and excellent
flooded fields for waterfowl in spring) will be seriously impacted - if not
totally bulldozed - by the four-lane "Bradford Bypass" slated for construction
in 2012. This "connector" will link Hwys. 400 and 404. Any millionaire
naturalists out there interested in buying some ecologically sensitive land
before its too late?

  Ron Fleming, Newmarket

Newmarket is halfway between Toronto and Barrie. Hochreiter Road runs west
from Bathurst Street (the north part of Bathurst beyond Queensville Sdrd., I
should point out).

I easily relocated the Dickcissel previously reported by Alfred Raab
this morning. There were at least two birds singing from exposed weeds
in a hay field. Area fields are being cut for hay so the situation may
not last.

From Highway 6 at Ferndale go west 0.9 km on County Rd. 9. There is a
piece of yellow ribbon on the right-of-way fence beside a solitary 2 m
cedar. Previously mentioned bales of hay wrapped in white plastic are
about 100 m further west. The birds were in the field south of the road.

Also seen Brewer's Blackbird a local specialty on Little Pike Bay Road
0.5 west of Highway 6. 4 Black-billed Cuckoos on Bury Road (runs
parallel to Highway 6 approx. 2 km to the west) between Little Pike Bay
Road and Pike Bay Road.

Bob Carswell. Richard Pope and I have just returned from 3 days birding at
Rainy River. It was my third visit to the area, the first for the other two and
it is definitely not a vintage year. They had a drought through May and early
June with the result that there were no Yellow Rails anywhere and very few Le
Conte's Sparrows. In addition no-one has found Western Kingbirds to this point.
On the other hand, White Pelicans and Black-billed Magpies were present in
good numbers and Windy Point produced lots of Franklin's Gulls and nesting
Piping Plovers. Marbled Godwits seem to be nesting again. We turned up a few
Sharp-tailed Grouse and Western Meadowlarks were everywhere. The three days
were marked with high winds and cold weather so that species like Connecticut
Warbler became hard to find.
Many thanks to Dan Lee of Lethbridge, Alta and Dave Elder for their
assistance in locating the birds Hugh Currie

As noted in my post from yesterday regarding Moorhens and Bitterns in the
Newmarket area, the threatened marsh area is along Hochreiter Road between
Bradford and Holland Landig is currently hosting (and perhaps has previously)
at least one Least Bittern on territory in breeding season.

The bird was seen again today by Rod and Denise Potter along with Keith Dunn.
This marks the sixth occasion (that I am aware of) on which the bird has been
observed at Hochreiter since May 20th, so its status as at least a probable
nester is in place. Does anyone know if the presence of this species makes the
wetland saveable? Basic inforamtion regarding the impending loss of this
wetland was mentioned in my post yesterday:

Cruelly, this single lane road with very good marsh habitat (and
