Highlights of reports received August 2 through August 9 from the
Niagara Frontier Region include GREAT EGRET, WHIP-
POOR-WILL and shorebirds.
August 3 at the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area, a regional
record count of 223 GREAT EGRETS, in the marshes below the Lewiston
Overlook on Route 77. Six of the EGRETS were marked with red bands
from the Motor Island heronry in the Niagara River. August 4, another
observer also counted 200 GREAT EGRETS below overlook.
Also in the Tonawanda marshes, a possible EARED GREBE, plus 2
REDHEADS, 16 PIED-BILLED GREBES, 14 D.-CREST. CORMORANTS, BL.-CR.
NIGHT-HERON, 3 OSPREY, many LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 5 BLACK TERNS and 4
BOBOLINKS. Heard calling along Meadville Road after sunset, 6 VIRGINIA
RAILS, BL.-CR. NIGHT-HERON, KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SEMIPALM. SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER,
PECTORAL SANDPIPER and a GREAT HORNED OWL.
Another sunset report, August 3, at the Wainfleet Bog, on Wilson
Road off Highway 3 in Ontario, 6 WHIP-POOR-WILLS calling with several
EASTERN SCREECH-OWLS and a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO.
Still in Ontario, 14 shorebird species on the north shore of Lake
Erie. Highlights included 8 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and a WHIMBREL at
the Poth Road turf farms, 4 SHORT-B. DOWITCHERS at Rock Point
Provincial Park, and a WHITE-R. SANDPIPER at Long Beach Conservation
Area.
At the Batavia Waste Water Plant, August 4, nine shorebird species
included a possible BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, plus two each of AMERICAN
WIGEON, RING-NECKED DUCK and LESSER SCAUP, 31 RUDDY DUCKS and a family
of COMMON MOORHENS.
August 4 in a yard on Lake Road in the Town of Wilson, 35 species
included a great count of 35 BALTIMORE ORIOLES, plus 7 NORTHERN
CARDINALS, 5 ROSE-BR. GROSBEAKS and 3 PURPLE FINCHES.
Also this week, several reports of OSPREY at Tifft Nature Preserve
in Buffalo. It was confirmed that four PEREGRINE FALCONS fledged from
the nest box on the Statler Building in downtown Buffalo. And on
Youngstown-Wilson Road in Porter, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD and EASTERN
MEADOWLARK.
It will be two weeks until the next report, Thursday, August 23. In
