Obviously the highlight of the week (and of the year so far) was an adult LONG-TAILED JAEGER discovered on the Ottawa River at the east end of Andrew Haydon Park on the morning of August 11th. This is the 1st time this species has been seen in Ottawa in nearly 30 years, and it is the 1st August record for our area. The bird put on excellent shows all day yesterday between Britannia Bay and Dick Bell Park and was still present today until at least mid-morning, chasing everything from Great Blue Herons to Ring-billed Gulls and even a Caspian Tern. The water levels on the Ottawa River continue to go down, providing excellent feeding habitat for shorebirds. 10 species were seen on the 11th. The only new addition since last week at Shirley's Bay was a juvenile White-rumped Sandpiper on the 12th, and the numbers of Semipalmated Plovers, Greater Yellowlegs, Least Sandpipers and Wilson's Snipe have definitely increased. Duck numbers have also been increasing on the river and sightings this past weekend included Wood Duck, American Wigeon, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal and Hooded Merganser. A male and 2 female Redhead were at the large quarry pond along Moodie Dr. south of Trail Rd. on the 12th, as well as at least 30 Ruddy Ducks. Soras were noted at Shirley's Bay and Dick Bell Park, several Bonaparte's Gulls and Common Terns continue to be seen along the river, and an adult Caspian Tern seen at Shirley's Bay on the 11th is most likely the same bird that the Jaeger was chasing at Andrew Haydon Park the next day. Other reports of interest were a family group of 3 Black-crowned Night-Herons at the Bruce Pit off Cedarview Rd. on the 12th, and a juvenile Red-necked Phalarope at the Casselman sewage lagoons on the morning of the 11th. There have been no reports of migrant songbirds other than the local breeding species...hopefully more to come as the season progresses! Thank you - Good Birding! - End transcript
