Winds were light west-northwest early gradually swinging to the east and then becoming moderate south-southeast in the afternoon. Raptor Observations: The flight overall was very good for the first day of the season with two distinct pulses of activity at mid morning and in the mid afternoon. Sharpies, Broad-wings and Kestrels made up the bulk of the movement. I really dont recall this many Sharp-shins this early during my tenure here at the watch but memory being what it is, there could easily have been a similar such start to a season. An Osprey and a Bald Eagle were both observed taking fish from the lake today. Non-raptor Observations: Cedar Waxwings seemed to be everywhere at once today, busily hawking insects from a number of perches within sight of the watch. Somewhat absent early in the day, Monarchs kicked into gear during the afternoon with perhaps hundreds in view at once during the mid afternoon portion of the day. A juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker was also noted during the first hour of the count. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Calvin Brennan ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.smrr.net/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
