Hello All, Jean and I visited a few beaches in St. Catharines today (September 8).
At Jones Beach (11:45 AM), we observed an Osprey flying westward. One Gadwall was observed with the many Mallards. Shorebirds observed included, Least Sandpiper (2) Semipalmated Sandpiper (1) and Sanderling (2). Common Terns (24) flew over the water as walked back to the parking area. At Municipal Beach (12:30 PM), we observed (despite the presence of jet-skis and one Border Collie) one American Golden-Plover, juvenile. Semipalmated Sandpiper (1) and Sanderling (2) were also observed. At Lakeside Park (1:00 PM), we observed a pair of Green-winged Teal with some Mallards. Semipalmated Sandpiper (2) were also seen. All birds were found at the west end of the beach in the park. At Charles Daley Park (2:15 PM), we observed a Wilson's Snipe. It was chased away from the pond's edge by a Green Heron. The Snipe ran into the small cluster of Willows on the west side of the pond. We observed it briefly once again in the same area before it ran back into the willows. All birds were observed at the east end of the park at 15 Mile Pond. Also observed were Great Blue Heron (2), Black-crowned Night-Heron, immature (1), Belted Kingfisher (1) and Caspian Tern (2).
