Wayne Parnall
Visitors:
Quite a few visitors today so I'm only going to mention a particular couple
who were visiting Canada from the UK...Brian and Hazel Watson of Carlisle,
England. Thanks to everyone who helped today...it was quite interesting at
times with birds all over the sky!! :)
Weather:
Mostly blue skies to start and strong NW winds. Much cooler initially with
10 C. Eventually, the clouds moved in and the strong winds backed around to
the W and then SW.
Raptor Observations:
Well...today provided our first good Broadwing flight which pushed our
total for the day to 13,990 raptors (you'd think we could've spotted 10
more birds!!!). Broadwings (12,727) were kettling and streaing rhough at
various heights and at one point we had a kettle of several 100 right in
front of the count area. It was another strong showing for Sharpies (973)
but the real treat was 3 juvenile Bald Eagles that appeared together right
along the cliff edge then turned and circled together only a couple of
hundred feet up and right in front of the counters and visitors!!
Non-raptor Observations:
Other interesting birds today included Common Nighthawk (1) and Common Loon
(7)
Predictions:
Looks like a bit warmer weather for the next couple of days with light NE
winds to start Thursday but switching to SE (worst wind direction at Hawk
Cliff). With the light winds initially NE I expect there'll be a bit of a
Broadwing movement again along with the usual September species. We're
looking forward to the first "Hawk Cliff Weekend" this coming weekend and
right now the winds and weather look very promising!
