Visitors:
The last day of The Festival of Hawks drew large crowds to the tower for
most of the day. At one point we had nearly 50 visitors on the tower. We
hope everyone enjoyed their tower time, and will visit again before the
season is over on Nov 30th.
Weather:
A great start to the day with winds from the North, and sun to create
thermals. Temps started at 14.5 C and reached 24.4 C by later afternoon.
During the 10:00 am hour our winds began to shift, and we had mainly
Southerly winds for the remainer of the day. A cloudless sky made for many
high flying migrants.
Raptor Observations:
A nice showing of Sharp Shinned Hawks, and Broad Wing Hawks today. The
BW's were mainly in the 9:00am hour and were distant and high kettles to
the North East of the tower. Also a nice day for migrating Norther
Harriers with a total of 40.
Non-raptor Observations:
Blue Jays "en mass" today with a total of approx 45,700 birds. Steady
streams near and far, and high straight thru to the noon hour...then
smaller numbers. Also noted migrating: Northern Flicker, Purple Finch,
Chimney Swift, White and Red Breasted Nuthatch, Common Snipe, Lesser Yellow
Legs, Ruby Throated Humming Bird, American Pipit, American Gold Finch.
Monarchs are still moving thru in small numbers.
