Weather:
Today continued hot and hazy with early day cirrus cloud dispersing by
midday and being replaced by cumulous clouds early in the afternoon. Winds
were minimal early in the day becoming light southeast by late morning then
southwest by early afternoon. This wind switch in the pm would actually
drop the humidity and improve visibility noticeably.
Raptor Observations:
While there was no appreciable migration of TVs, the movement of other
species was similar to yesterday and other days since this unseasonable
warm spell began. Sharpies were more or less steady throughout the day with
a smattering of other birds mixed in. With todays Harrier count, a
milestone for the species was reached with now over 14,000 Harriers counted
since the beginning of the watch in 1983. Falcons continue to be a welcome
surprise with a couple of good views of Peregrines today along with a nice
pulse of Kestrels in the afternoon and a Merlin or two thrown in for good
measure. Bald Eagles continue on what looks to be a record pace with the
season total to date about thirty birds shy of the single season high at
this site.
