This is Chris Lewis reporting. A week of very pleasant weather made for comfortable birding for this time of year in the Ottawa area. Recent waterfowl reports included 2 Snow Geese at Constance Bay on the 4th, a lone juvenile Brant on the shore at the east end of Andrew Haydon Park still present as of Nov. 4th, a few Long-tailed Ducks and all 3 species of scoters between the Deschenes rapids and Constance Bay, increasing numbers of Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye and Hooded Mergansers in various locations, and the first seasonal report of a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on the river between the Champlain Bridge and Remic rapids on the 31st. This bird was seen from the Remic rapids lookout on the 3rd, and a male Barrow's was also seen on the Rideau River north of the Rideau Tennis Club on the 4th. At least one Red-throated Loon was still at Shirley's Bay on the 2nd, several Horned Grebes and a few Red-necked Grebes continue to hang out on the Ottawa River, and at least 2 EARED GREBES were still at the Alfred sewage lagoons on the 31st. Raptor reports included a very late Osprey at Shirley's Bay from the 31st to the 4th, Bald Eagle, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed and Rough-legged Hawk and Merlin in various locations, and individual Peregrine Falcons at Greenbank Rd. south of Fallowfield Rd. on the 30th, and at Deschenes on the 2nd. Shorebirds have as expected become quite scarce; a late Greater Yellowlegs was at Shirley's Bay boat launch on the 3rd, a couple of Black-bellied Plovers were at Andrew Haydon Park and Constance Bay on the 4th and a single White-rumped Sandpiper was at the east end of Andrew Haydon also on the 4th. A record high Ottawa-area number of at least 75 Sandhill Cranes was counted in the Milton Rd. area northeast of Carlsbad Springs on the 31st; 36 were noted here on the 2nd. Two Eastern Screech-Owls were reported near Cumberland Ridge Rd. back on the 24th, and single Northern Shrikes were reported from this location as well as from the Kerwin Rd. area between Kanata and Dunrobin this past week. A late Chipping Sparrow was discovered on the Jack Pine Trail along Moodie Dr. on the 28th and a Fox Sparrow was here on the 28th and the 3rd. A rather late Eastern Meadowlark was seen along March Valley Rd. on the 3rd, and a flock of approx. 40 Rusty Blackbirds was found along Giroux Rd. east of Frank Kenny Rd. on the 3rd as well. Reports of Bohemian Waxwings, Snow Buntings, Pine Grosbeaks, Pine Siskins and Evening Grosbeaks continue to come in, and the first Common Redpolls of the season have begun to arrive, with a few fly-overs reported since the 29th.
