THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 8:30 AM, MONDAY NOVEMBER 12, 2007
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
The bird of the week was an adult CALIFORNIA GULL discovered on Nov. 6th at
the large quarry pond on the east side of Moodie Drive south of Trail Rd. It
was seen here again on the 8th but has not been subsequently reported.
Other highlights this past week included the continuing presence of a male
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on the Rideau River off Riverain Park , at least 65 Sandhill
Cranes still in the Milton and Trim Rd. area as of the 10th, and an extremely
late adult SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (a November record for Ottawa) at the
quarry pond on Giroux Rd. east of Frank Kenny Rd.
Snow Geese have been sporadically appearing in various locations in one's
and two's, the numbers of diving ducks continue to build up on the Ottawa
River, and 45 Ruddy Ducks were still at the Alfred sewage lagoons along with
a good selection of waterfowl and 2 AMERICAN COOTS on the 10th. A single
GRAY PARTRIDGE was spotted in the Cumberland area on the 10th. The very
late Osprey at Shirley's Bay was even later on the 6th, and it looks
like it may
be a good season for Rough-legged Hawks in our area, as more reports
continue to come in. Shorebird sightings included 2 Killdeer and 5 Pectoral
Sandpipers at the aforementioned pond on Giroux Rd. on the 10th and 4
Dunlin at Shirley's Bay on the 6th. The eastern sewage lagoons continued to
be attractive to some late Bonaparte's Gulls - one was at the St. Albert
lagoons on the 5th, and 50 were at the Embrun lagoons on the 10th. The 1st
seasonal reports of Iceland Gull came in on the 8th from both the Ottawa
River and the Moodie Dr. pond.
Several Horned Larks, a few American Pipits, and good numbers of Snow
Buntings were seen this past week especially east of the city. A somewhat
late Savannah Sparrow visited a feeder in Manotick on the 7th along with 4
Fox Sparrows, and 2 Fox Sparrows were seen along the Jack Pine Trail south
of Bells Corners on the 9th. The influx of Bohemian Waxwings, Pine
Grosbeaks, Common Redpolls and Evening Grosbeaks continues, on a small
scale as yet (but winter isn't here yet either), and a report from
the west side
of Lac La Peche in Gatineau Park on the 11th provided another indication
of an impending "winter invasion" into our area with the aforementioned
species plus a half-dozen White-winged Crossbills.
Thank you - Good Birding!
