With Stan Long's update yesterday regarding southeast York region (i.e. Reesor
Pond), then Frank Pinella's report today from mid-central York region (re:
Golden Eagles over Richmond Hill), it seemed only fitting to complete the York
picture with a report from the northwest part of the region...
Keith Dunn of Keswick had two Northern Shrikes, a male Northern Harrier, and
a Red Bellied Woodpecker on The Queensway North (just south of Deer Park Road)
in Keswick today. Yesterday, also in Keswick, Keith had ten Snow Buntings and
a Merlin along Ravenshoe Road West, then a mixed flock of ten Bohemian
Waxwings, twelve Pine Grosbeaks and three American Robins all feeding on the
same tree where Glenwoods Avenue dead ends at the lake a few metres west of
Lake Drive.
Last week in northeast Newmarket Mike Van den Tillaart had a single
Yellow-rumped Warbler in his yard on Waratah Avenue and a Northern Mockingbird
just southwest of Hwy. 404 and Davis Drive. Mike and I had another Mockingbird
today at Scanlon Creek in Bradford, as well as a single Wood Duck. At the
north end of Bathurst Street just northwest of Holland Landing we had a
Northern Shrike and, on nearby Hochreiter Road, we had a female Northern
Harrier.
Last Saturday afternoon east of Aurora I watched a Raven interacting
aggressively with a Red-tailed Hawk in the sky just south of St. John's Sdrd.
and west of Kennedy Road. It was an interesting aerial confrontation that I'm
not sure either bird "won" - eventually the Red-tail casually circled away
southward while the raven flew east, gronking haughtily.
With gannets on the brain because of recent OFO posts, I couldn't help
thinking that the raven's big Roman nose and long wedged tail gave it the same
sort of jizz as a gannet -pointed at both ends.
Ron Fleming, Newmarket
Newmarket is north of Toronto and south of Barrie.
Keswick is north of Newmarket, along the south shore of Lake Simcoe.
Bradford (which is actually in Simcoe county) is just northwest of Newmarket,
as is Holland Landing. Aurora is directly south of Newmarket by a short
distance.
