THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 5:30 pm, SUNDAY DECEMBER 23, 2007

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Two of our local Christmas Bird Counts this past week were two radically
different experiences. The Ottawa-Gatineau Count on Dec. 16th was
crippled by a major snowstorm. The compilation meeting was cancelled
and the results will be compiled on a later date. The Dunrobin-Breckenridge
Count on the 22nd on the other hand, was a great day with mild
temperatures and several highlights including record high counts of Wild
Turkeys and American Crows, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK at Huntmar and
Old Carp Rds., an Eastern Screech-Owl in the Aylmer / Breckenridge area
and 4 HOARY REDPOLLS at various locations including 2 at feeders along
Torbolton Ridge Rd.

In other news.....a TUFTED TITMOUSE was discovered coming to feeders at
#103 Manitou St. in Forest Park (Embrun) on December 22nd and was still
very active here on the morning of the 23rd. There is no need to enter the
property as the feeders are clearly visible from the road. The female
HARLEQUIN DUCK is still present on the Ottawa River near the north shore just
east of the Champlain Bridge along with 2 Long-tailed Ducks, and a male
hybrid Common X BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was in the same area this week
until at least the 21st - this may be the same bird that over-wintered in
Ottawa for the past 3 years. A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was also seen
again farther east at Remic rapids on the 22nd. The evening gull roost at
Remic rapids on the 22nd consisted of only a couple of hundred gulls but
included approx. 20 Glaucous and 3 Iceland Gulls.

Small coveys of GRAY PARTRIDGE were seen east of Ottawa on the 20th on
Conc. #19 at Ste-Rose, and on Giroux Rd. east of the quarry pond. Two adult
Bald Eagles have been feeding on a carcass on the ice of the Ottawa River
east of the Rockcliffe airport all week, and Red-tailed Hawk was seen
feeding here (on same carcass but without eagles) on the 23rd. A Peregrine
Falcon was at a duck carcass on the Rideau River north of the Tennis Club
on the 20th, and on the 22nd two Peregrines were perched together on the
small islet north of the Champlain Bridge parking lot. Three Snowy Owls were
found in the Ste-Rose area on the 15th, 2 Barred Owls continue to be quite
accommodating along March Valley Rd. as of at least the 22nd, and a
record late YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER first discovered on the 13th was
seen again on the 18th in the Arboretum of the Central Experimental Farm.

Lingering songbirds included a Carolina Wren still in the Graham Park /
Qualcomm neighbourhood on the 19th, a Winter Wren at Mud Lake, Britannia
on the 15th, a few American Robins here and there over the past week, and
2 Gray Catbirds and 2 Hermit Thrushes in different locations on the 16th. The
catbird in Constance Bay continues to frequent the feeders and cedar
hedges on Goodin St. as of the 22nd. The OREGON JUNCO at the feeders in
the Fletcher Wildlife Garden was most recently reported on the 16th, and
Bohemian Waxwings, Pine Grosbeaks, Common Redpolls and Evening
Grosbeaks continue to be reported from all over our area.

Thank you - Good Birding, and best of the season to all!
