Our annual Boxing Day Christmas Count results are still coming in from
observers. In no specific order, several good birds were seen on the count
this year. At LaSalle Park a Ruby-crowned Kinglet was seen at the boardwalk
which skirts the beach on the waterfront trail. It was hanging around with
a number of chickadees, Golden-crowned Kinglet and a couple of Brown
Creepers. Also at LaSalle were a surprising number of Tundra Swans resting
on the rock islands at the east end of the park. Red-necked Grebes are still
being seen on the bay off LaSalle Marina. A Lesser Black-backed Gull was
seen early in the morning from Woodland Cemetery and another adult just off
the Burlington Golf & Country Club later in the afternoon. At Woodland
Cemetery a Long-eared Owl was seen at dawn. Glaucous Gulls seem to be
numerous on the bay with at least 10 being seen on the early morning fly.
Belted Kingfisher was also present here at Woodland. Many reports of Bald
Eagles being seen around the bay with at least 4 being reported on the bay,
one near the Desjardins Canal which gave photographic opportunities and one
near Burloak Bluffs in Oakville. A Hermit Thrush was seen in the Spring
Creek Valley area of Dundas. A Short-eared Owl was seen count day at
Olfield and Harvest Road. Winter finch reports were limited to both Redpoll
species. A Hoary Redpoll made an appearance this week at a feeder out in
Flamborough and they were from the Rock Chapel area on count day. During
count week Eastern Bluebirds were seen in the Rock Chapel area too. Up on
the Stoney Creek Mountain at first Road West, Wild Turkey were seen in the
count week and 2 Ring-necked Pheasants were seen on count day.

The NORTHERN HAWK OWL is still being seen up on 10th Road East. Also
reported from here was a Northern Shrike. These are not in the count area
for the CBC. Down at the lake in Stoney Creek at Sayers Park a first year
male King Eider was seen last Sunday.

Up at the Guelph Arboretum this week, numerous reports of Pine Grosbeak and
if patient enough a flock of Bohemian Waxwings are still being seen surfing
around the area.

Another good sighting this week which is out of the count area is of a
Tufted Titmouse which is frequenting Shoracres/Paletta Park in Burlington.
This bird has been reported on and off since the beginning of December.

Out at the Brantford Airport a small covey of 4 Gray Partridge have been
seen again this week a couple of times. The last place viewed was at the SE
intersection of Airport Rd. and York St foraging on the ground at the NW
corner of a commercial building with a sign marking the business as
"Emerson".

In the odds and sods this week, a Peregrine Falcon remains at the lift
bridge harassing pigeons and the local Red-tailed Hawk. Out in Brant Co.
near Glen Morris a couple of Ruffed Grouse were flushed from behind a
residence there. Wild Turkey were seen at the intersection of Olfield and
Hwy 5. A Merlin is making a winter territory around Seafare Drive in
Oakville. Great Horned Owls are being reported in the Glen Morris area
hooting extremely loudly! and also at the Creek Path Woods in Oakville this
week.

Count week ends on December 29th. Please forward your sightings. Take note
of the goodies around the area for your New Years Day lists, they're all new
birds in 2008! Happy New Year.

Good birding!
