Hi Everyone,
Yesterday, Thursday, December 27, 2007, birded the DuPont Plant with my
son Ben. Some of the highlights were 27 American Wigeon, 44 American Coot,
38 Redhead and 14 Gadwall.
Today, Friday, December 28, 2007 we birded both Wolfe and Amherst
Islands. On Wolfe Island we observed 3 Snowy Owls, 45 Rough-legged Hawks, 5
Red-tailed Hawks, 15 Gadwall, 28 Bufflehead, 6 American Kestrels, 1000+ Snow
Buntings, 1 White-winged Scoter, 110 Tundra Swans, 1 ad. Bald Eagle, 2 male
N. Pintails, 1 male Canvasback, 2 Brown-headed Cowbirds, 30 American Coots,
1 Northern Shrike and 1 Hoary Redpoll. Overall, it was pretty good on Wolfe
Island. On Amherst it was quiet compared to Wolfe Island. We got to see 1
Northern Shrike, 3 Am. Kestrels, 7 Rough-legged Hawks, 4 Red-tailed Hawks
and 1 Northern Saw-whet Owl in the Owl Woods thanks to Bud Rowe and Paul
Mackenzie.
Directions: Amherst Island: Located 18 km. west of Kingston. Exit off
Hwy.
401 at exit 593 (County Rd. 4, Camden East) and drive south to the very end
(Millhaven).
Turn right on Hwy. 33 and drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the
Amherst Island ferry. The ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the
half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is now $8.00 Canadian
round trip. There are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on
the ferry, and at the island ferry dock. The East End K.F.N. property
is at the easternmost part of the island on the east side of the Lower
Forty Foot Road.
Wolfe Island: The ferry can be reach along the water front in
downtown Kingston.
