Highlights of reports received December 27 through January 3 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include SABINE'S GULL, FRANKLIN'S GULL,
EARED GREBE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, PEREGRINE FALCONS and PINE GROSBEAK.
As of January 1, an adult SABINE'S GULL and a first winter
FRANKLIN'S GULL were still present on Lake Erie at Dunkirk Harbor. In
40 years of BOS records, there are 105 records of SABINE'S GULL, but
only one record of an adult plumage SABINE'S GULL.
In addition to abundant waterfowl, HORNED GREBES, D.-CREST.
CORMORANTS, GREAT BLUE HERONS and an occasional BALD EAGLE at Dunkirk
Harbor, an EARED GREBE, December 29 and 30, just west of the harbor,
between Point Gratiot and the power plant.
From the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area, a juvenile NORTHERN
GOSHAWK has been reported several times, including December 30, on
Bartel Road, 100 to 200 yards from Ditch Road.
At LaSalle Park in Buffalo, 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS were reported again
December 27. One falcon perched in a tree on Amvets Drive between
flights; the other falcon rested on a utility wire.
December 29, 4 LITTLE GULLS on the Niagara River at Fort Erie,
Ontario. Three LITTLE GULLS were north of the railroad bridge, and one
at the end of the Bird Island Pier. Also at Fort Erie, up to 5000
BONAPARTE'S GULLS, SURF SCOTER, WHITE-
WINGED SCOTER, BLACK SCOTER and over 100 LONG-TAILED DUCKS.
January 1, a single PINE GROSBEAK with 6 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS on Lutts
Road in the Niagara County Town of Porter.
COMMON REDPOLLS continue throughout the region. In Buffalo, 3 COMMON
REDPOLLS in Forest Lawn Cemetery, at the larch trees near the dump
entrance. At feeders, four redpolls in Cheektowaga, and a mixed flock
of redpolls and PINE SISKINS in Orchard Park. On Hayes Hollow Road in
the Town of Colden, 80 COMMON REDPOLLS and 20 PINE SISKINS, plus
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK and NORTHERN SHRIKE.
BALD EAGLES this week - two in the Iroquois Refuge in the marshes
off Feeder Road, north of Route 77. Two more EAGLES at Strawberry
Island off Riverside in Buffalo. And, an adult BALD EAGLE north of the
Village of Attica in Wyoming County, at Stroh Road and Tonawanda Creek.
Dial-a-Bird will not be updated until Thursday evening, January 17.
