Hello,
My wife, Lise and I spent Thursday birding Wolfe Island, the sun was out, and temperatures were around -18 Celsius all day. We saw over 60 plus Rough-legged Hawks, three Red-tailed Hawks, four Snowy Owls, one was a large female, almost fully white with just a hint of a few brown feathers on her chest. There was also two Short-eared Owls (got great pictures of one sitting on a hydro line), two Northern Shrikes, I saw my first juvenile, it did not have its' black face mask yet, just a slight brown area on its' face. There were a few hundred Snow Buntings, fifty or more Common Redpolls, two American Kestrels and five Wild Turkeys We came across a juvenile Bald Eagle finishing up on a merganser. It had made the road its' dinner table. I spoke with another birder who had just seen a Mockingbird, I may have seen it too, not 100% sure. All in all it was a great day for birding not to mentioning over one hundred deer and one Red fox. Also, just five minutes out of Smithfalls coming in from Merrickville we saw 63 Wild Turkeys in one group feeding in a farm field. Cheers, Brian Young Wolfe Island can be reached from Ontario Street and the corner of Barrack Street in Kingston, the ferry pretty much leaves the mainland on the hour and the island on the half hours, the passage is free. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
