The waterfowl survey was conducted last weekend and although I don't have all the local results yet, there were some interesting highlights; 14 species of waterfowl on Amherst Island including a remarkable 580 Gadwall, 2 White-winged and 1 Surf Scoter. Tundra Swans are well distributed; 48 on Amherst, 47 on Howe Island and 37 on Wolfe. The raptor picture on Wolfe continues to improve. Snowy Owl numbers seem to be increasing daily; 4 on Jan. 3rd, 5 on the 5th, and 7 yesterday. There were 3 Barred Owls on Howe last Saturday and another on Amherst on Sunday. The usually reliable Screech Owl at Cartwright's Point put in an appearance this week. Other sightings of note; 11 Bald Eagles on Howe last Saturday, a Merlin at Taylor-Kidd and Collins Bay Road, 9 Am. Kestrels and chasing the same prey, no doubt, 6 N. Shrikes on Wolfe yesterday. There were 4 Robins on Howe Island on Saturday and another 4 at Camden East on Sunday. A Swamp Sparrow was at Little Cat on Tuesday and 2 White-throated Sparrows were reported; 1 at Lemoine Pt. on the 4th, and the second at Sillsville on the 8th. The Tufted Titmouse at Bath was seen again on Tuesday. Common Redpolls continue to dominate the finch tally and amongst them several Hoaries; 2 on Howe Jan. 4th, 1 at Bedford Mills on the 4th and 7th, and 1 at Camden East on the 6th. There were 11 Pine Grosbeaks just east of the city on the 8th, and two sightings of Evening Grosbeaks; 1 at Lemoine Point and 5 at Bedford Mills last Friday.
