On January 25th, 2008 this is the HNC Birding Report: BOHEMIAN WAXWING HOARY REDPOLL
Brant Wood Duck Harlequin Duck Wild Turkey Bald Eagle Red-tailed Hawk (Western, Calurus Rufous Morph) Thayer's Gull Iceland Gull Glaucous Gull Common Redpoll Pine Siskin A fairly quiet week in the Hamilton Study Area. Cold temperatures don't help with getting out and about to skulk things out. Winter finches and other wanderers are still being located in the area. BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS are still being seen sporadically between 4th and 5th Concession on Middletown Road. Today a flock of about 20 birds flew past over Middletown and continued on and the same flock flew the opposite way a short time late, never landing to see these magnificent birds. A flock of 50 Pine Grosbeaks were seen on Concession 6 East, just east of Centre Road above Waterdown. Common Redpolls are being seen in the Flamborough Area with the report of a HOARY REDPOLL amongst a flock of them this week. A Pine Siskin was reported from Brantford earlier in the week. Other good winter birds to be seen include a Brant mixed in with a group of Canada Geese at the end of Victoria Ave. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER the Port Authority. The bird has been seen from behind the gates or check with the security personnel. A Wood Duck has been seen sporadically at LaSalle Park. Also on the bay, Bald Eagles were seen today harassing the gulls near Canada Centre for Inland Waters and gulls seen on the ice on the bay include Thayer's, Iceland and Glaucous Gull. Down in Mississauga, a lovely pair of Harlequin Ducks were seen to the west of Saddington Park last Saturday in the sheltered bay there. In the odds and sods, the Western Red-tailed Hawk has been seen cruising around the 5th Concession and Middletown Road area, quite a nice bird to get a look at. Sorry to be short and sweet but that's the news for the week. Have a great week and report your sightings to the hotline!
