THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 7:00 am, MONDAY JANUARY 28, 2008

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

As January winds down, not much is new on the local birding scene, but
some lingering winterers and rarities as well as some very pleasant weather
for this time of year continue to make it worthwhile going out.

The most interesting report was of a flock of 10 Snow Geese - an
unprecedented number for Ottawa for this time of year. They were seen
flying south over the Richmond area on the afternoon of the 27th. A female
HARLEQUIN DUCK is still present on the Ottawa River north of Bate Island, the
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was still in the area of Old Carp Rd. and Gourlay
Lane on the 23rd and the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE continues to appear
content to reside on Millbrook Cr. in Parkwood Hills as of the 27th. This also
seems to be the winter of the Hermit Thrush and the GRAY CATBIRD in our
area - one of the former was seen on the 26th below the rapids in
Deschenes, and one of the latter was found near the southwest corner of
Mud Lake in the Britannia Conservation Area on the 27th.

A flock of at least 30 Wild Turkeys continues to frequent an old orchard at
Carling Ave. and Herzberg Rd. An adult Bald Eagle was seen again from
March Valley Rd. on the 27th. Several Cooper's Hawks were reported over
the past week, and both a Cooper's and a Sharp-shinned Hawk were noted
in a backyard on Cooper St. in downtown Ottawa, and an adult Northern
Goshawk was seen along Rifle Rd. near Shirley's Bay on the 23rd. Two
Rough-legged Hawks were seen along Huntmar Rd. and a single dark
morph Rough-legged is still being seen regulary along March Valley Rd.
Single Peregrine Falcons were seen near the Ottawa River on both the
Quebec side in Deschenes and the Ontario side on the R.H. Coats building
at Tunney's Pasture this past week. On the 24th, the large quarry pond along
Moodie Dr. south of Trail Rd. again hosted several thousand gulls including
single adult Thayer's and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, at least 45 Iceland and
75 Glaucous Gulls and over 600 Great Black-backed Gulls.

In the passerine department, a couple of Northern Shrikes were spotted
along Huntmar Rd. as well as Rifle Rd. this weekend, 16 Horned Larks as well
as approx. 150 Snow Buntings were found along Akins Rd. and Rushmore Rd.
on the 26th, Bohemian Waxwings continue to show up in groups of 2 to 400
in various locations and a handful of Cedar Waxwings were at Britannia on
the 27th. The first report this year of White-winged Crossbills came from a
residential area on Henry Farm Dr. in Nepean - a dozen birds appeared here
on the 26th. Small numbers of Pine Grosbeaks, Common Redpolls and
Evening Grosbeaks were reported from various locations this week as well.

Thank you - Good Birding!
