Hello Ontbirders: On Saturday February 23, Carolyn King and I birded at Humber Bay East Park in Toronto from 4:30 to 6:10 pm. We saw four Horned Grebes (3 together and one lone bird) near the southwest point. Also present there were White-winged Scoters (1 adult male and 1 first-winter male) and Gadwall (5). In the bay on the northeast side there were American Coot (2), Canvasback (1 male), Hooded Merganser (1 female), Redhead (~20), and Trumpeter Swans (2 adult and 2 immature - no wing tags noted). There was also a male Hooded Merganser in the central bay area. We did not find the previously reported Harlequin Duck female. The bay and lake also hosted large flocks of the more common waterfowl, including Greater Scaup, Long-tailed Duck, Mallard, Red-breasted and Common Mergansers, and some Mute Swan, Canada Goose, American Black Duck, Bufflehead and Common Goldeneye. Directions: >From the Gardiner expressway westbound, exit at South Kingsway to the >Queensway. At Parklawn Road, turn south (left), which leads directly into >Humber Bay East Park. Follow the signs to the parking area. Good luck with those last 6 days of winter listing!
