THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 9:30 pm, SUNDAY MARCH 2, 2008

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

The most exciting bird of the week was a dark morph GYRFALCON seen on
the afternoon of Feb. 25th along the Ottawa River at the Deschenes rapids.
A dark Gyr (no doubt the same bird) was subsequently reported on the
afternoon of March 1st, on the Rideau Canal at Queen Elizabeth Drive and
1st Avenue, and was last seen heading east. Hopefully there will be more
news to come if this bird continues to stick around! Otherwise, there have
been a few reports of local interest as well as one from farther afield in
eastern Ontario...

The male Barrow's Goldeneye on the Rideau River north of the Hurdman
bridge was still present here on March 2nd. Two pairs of adult Bald Eagles
were seen flying over March Valley Rd. and Riddell Dr. on February 27th. Six
Bald Eagles (mostly adults) and an adult Golden Eagle were seen flying over
the Eardley escarpment in the Gatineau hills on March 2nd. Other
noteworthy birds in this area on the 2nd included a dozen Wild Turkeys, a
Northern Goshawk, numerous Common Ravens displaying courtship
manoeuvres, and 2 Red Crossbills feeding in the tops of coniferous trees near
Ramsay Lake.

On the 26th at the Deschenes rapids on the Quebec side of the Ottawa
River there was an adult Peregrine Falcon and 1 Ring-billed Gull as well as 1
Iceland and 2 Glaucous Gulls, and the wintering Hermit Thrush. On the 29th
at the Trail Rd. Landfill, among a small number of gulls (predominantly
Herring, with a few Great Black-backed, there were at least 7 Iceland and 3
Glaucous Gulls of various ages, and a 1st-winter Thayer's Gull. A female RED-
BELLIED WOODPECKER has evidently been a very sporadic and
unpredictable visitor to a feeder on Lavigne Rd. in Hammond (east of
Ottawa) this year, and another female of this species is coming to a feeder
quite a bit farther east on County Rd. 10 near Williamstown, ON. The latter
feeder is also hosting an adult male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD; both the
woodpecker and the blackbird were present on the 29th.

The TUFTED TITMOUSE in Forest Park (Embrun) remains faithful to its food
supply as of the 29th. The Hermit Thrush at the feeders on Hurdman Rd. by
the Rideau River is also still holding its own as of the 2nd. A flock of about 50
Cedar Waxwings was observed at Deschenes on the 28th, and flocks of up
to 70 Bohemian Waxwings were noted along Lucerne Blvd. near Aylmer,
Quebec as well as along Rifle Rd. towards Shirley's Bay on the 2nd. At least
22 American Robins were at Kilborn and Playfair Dr. in the neighbourhood of
Alta Vista the same day; according to the observer, this is a popular
wintering spot for this species. Both a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and a
HOARY REDPOLL were at a feeder in the Osgoode area south of Ottawa on
the 29th. The warbler has apparently been here since last fall.

Thank you - Good Birding!
