Birded today with Bud Rowe and Paul Mackenzie at Prince Edward Point where we observed many spring arrivals as well as some lingering winter birds. Highlights include 1 BARN SWALLOW and 1GREATER YELLOWLEGS. Other spring arrivals include 5 COMMON LOONS, 4 HORNED GREBES, 1 WINTER WREN, 3 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, 3 WILSON'S SNIPE, 1 EASTERN PHOEBE and 1 NORTHERN FLICKER. In the open waters there were hundreds of LONG-TAILED DUCKS and WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS with lesser numbers of GREATER and LESSER SCAUP and RED-BREASTED AND COMMON MERGANSERS. Wintering birds observed were 1 PINE GROSBEAK, 20 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE. There were 10 TURKEY VULTURES soaring about and SONG SPARROWS and KILLDEER were very numerous. An OSPREY and another EASTERN PHOEBE were observed near Hay Bay. We tallied 61 species for the day. The first butterfly for 2008, a Mourning Cloak, was seen at Little Bluff C.A.
