Birders attempting to access Pelee Island to look for the Burrowing Owl should be aware that the larger of the two ferries, the "Jiimaan", is in for repairs. Only the "Pelee Islander" is in operation. It can only take a few vehicles (about 10), reservations are required and it is usually booked up several days ahead. Walk-on passengers should have no problem getting passage.
Since the location of the owl is at least 5 kilometres from where the ferry arrives at West Dock, an option you might consider is to take a bicycle, for which there is still a fee, but at least you will have some mode of transportation.
