The Carden Challenge took place in a mix of rain, drizzle, an a bit of sun last
Friday night and Saturday, with 11 teams competing to see the most species
within the Carden CBC circle in 24 hours.

A total of 146 species were seen, including 12 species new to the Challenge.
The winning team, with 119 species, was Ethan Meleg, Mark Weircinski, and Greg
Stroud. In the recreational category, the winning team with 106 species was
Ron Reid, Brenan Ackert, Jane Ball and Jane Sloley.

Overall, the Challenge raised over $16,000 towards conservation of bird
habitats on the Carden Alvar.

Besides the usual Carden specialties such as Loggerhead Shrike and Upland
Sandpiper, this year's count included Brewster's Warbler in 3 locations,
Blue-winged Warbler, and migrant Blackpoll Warbler. Several new shorebirds
showed up as well, including Least Sandpiper and Black-bellied Plover. In
Prospect Marsh, Moorhen was seen by several teams.

Thanks to everyone who participated and sponsored teams in the 4th annual
Carden Challenge.
