Although this is out of area for much of Ontario, we thought that nearby
list members might have some interest in this upcoming event -- especially the
featured speaker.
The 60th Anniversary Annual Meeting of the New York State Ornithological
Association (NYSOA) will be held September 19-21, 2008 at the Rochester
Marriott Airport Hotel. Join the Rochester Birding Association, the Burroughs
Audubon Nature Club and the officers and directors of the New York State
Ornithological Association for an exciting weekend: great fall birding,
cutting-edge ornithological and conservation research presentations, an
outstanding and world-renowned featured speaker.and good food and fellowship,
too.
We've got a great weekend planned for you. As all birders in Western New
York know, the Rochester area enjoys one of the longest and most pleasant fall
seasons in the nation.and we can hope for good birds as well. The Rochester
area is blessed with helpful geography and a broad diversity
of bird habitats. And field trips are scheduled on Friday afternoon and
Saturday morning to the Braddock Bay Bird Observatory banding station and
Global Important Bird Areas - including Hamlin Beach State Park and the
Braddock Bay area.
In addition to field trips, highlights of the week are the Friday evening
buffet dinner and workshops, the Saturday afternoon research paper
presentations, and the Saturday evening banquet featuring our speaker, Peter
Harrison, the world-renowned expert on seabirds. Author of "Seabirds: An
Identification Guide," the definitive book on the seabirds of the world (bring
your copy for autographs), Peter has spent years travelling all the oceans of
the world doing fundamental research and leading tours. An entertaining and
incisive speaker, he delivers with wit and passion a serious message about the
need to conserve habitats for all birds.
And the Rochester Marriott Airport Hotel was completely renovated and
refurbished in 2007; it is a very comfortable hotel convenient to some of the
best birding sites in the area and, for the non-birder, the world-famous Strong
Museum of Play, the Rochester Museum and Science Center, the Memorial
Art Gallery, the fall beauty of the Finger Lakes wine country, good shopping
and lots more.
You should not miss this weekend. If you've been here before, you know how
good it can be. If you haven't, isn't it time you found out? Register now to
join us for the entire exciting weekend. For more information and registration
forms please visit the NYSOA website: www.nybirds.org or call
(585) 671-5479 or (585) 482-3588.
